SDG seeks a Director of Learning to create and deliver the highest quality and most compelling learning opportunities and conferences for our members. Under the direction of the President & CEO, the Director of Learning will lead and implement program curriculum that strengthens effective individual and collective philanthropy in our region. They will also work in close conjunction with the Vice President of Collaboration & Special Initiatives to support events for our funder and cross-sector collaborations and learning experiences that advance our equity and impact investing strategies.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Takes lead responsibility for ensuring the design and implementation of engaging and cutting-edge member learning experiences in best practices and emerging trends of effective philanthropy and critical information about regional issue areas and needs.
  • Works closely with the President & CEO, VP of Collaboration & Special Initiatives, the Program Committee and other members and partners to conceptualize program offerings and to ensure that member, community and nonprofit voices are heard in program development.
  • Develops the structure and content for the annual curriculum and is also ready to adjust offerings based on hot issues that arise as the year proceeds. Offerings will include a full day Annual Conference and one or more half day summits.
  • Identifies impressive, inspirational speakers and topics. Serves as liaison with program speakers to ensure they are prepared for our sessions and achieve program objectives.
  • Keeps up with best practices and best speakers in philanthropy and community issues.
  • Pilots and launches an innovative new “learning circle” model of member service, to more deeply engage SDG members with each other in small networking groups based on criteria such as geography, interest area, organizational role or structure, or other factors. Deploys relationship building strategies to keep members connected to learning and to each other.
  • Works closely with the VP of Collaboration and Special Initiatives and the chairs of the funder and cross-sector collaboratives to produce relevant events and programs as well as to deliver on our new organizational objectives around equity and impact investing through one-off programs and thematically linked series.
  • Identifies and cultivates local, state and national partnerships with members, subject matter experts and other philanthropy serving organizations so SDG can enhance its learning sessions and conferences in coordination with others.
  • Ensures that learning opportunities are available throughout the entire San Diego region by identifying geographically diverse spaces to host events and utilizing technology for remote learning options.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

5+ years experience and demonstrated success in developing and implementing similar types of programming and events; experience in the nonprofit/philanthropic sector preferred; proven capacity to quickly learn new things; excellent writing and research skills; experience in curriculum development, group facilitation, adult learning and network building a plus; strong attention to detail; excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; top notch organizational skills with an ability to multi-task and work under deadline on multiple projects using solid project management and planning expertise; both a creative and entrepreneurial idea generator as well as a skilled implementer; ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a part of a small team; passion for the wellbeing of the San Diego community. Also, familiarity with Microsoft Office, ability to lift 15 pounds, possession of a CA Driver's License with a good driving record and access to a reliable, properly insured vehicle for travel.

Salary and Benefits

San Diego Grantmakers provides a generous compensation package, including medical, dental, vision; a Simple IRA retirement plan; as well as paid vacation and holidays. The salary range is $60,000 to $70,000.
