San Francisco, United States Genentech Full time
The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

U.S. Pharmaceutical Technical Development (PTDU) develops and supports manufacturing processes, formulations, delivery devices, analytical methods, and packaging solutions to meet Genentech's protein pharmaceutical pipeline's end-to-end (discovery to commercialization) development needs. Through innovation, efficiency, and collaboration, we enable the delivery of novel medicines that meet the critical needs of patients.

The Opportunity

We seek a highly motivated individual to join the Department of Protein Analytical Chemistry (PAC) (within PTDU) as a Technical Development Scientist. A successful candidate will work hands-on in the laboratory to generate analytical data supporting the pipeline and technical development projects. This will include analytical characterization and testing, as well as the development and execution of analytical methods and validation support. The candidate may collaborate with cross-functional colleagues and contribute to manufacturing process development, clinical trial, and commercialization-enabling regulatory filings (e.g., BLAs and INDs).

The Scientist will support mass spectrometry (MS) predominantly-based analyses of large molecules through sample preparation, data generation, analysis, and troubleshooting. They may be involved in developing new MS methods/assays as needed to characterize different large molecule therapeutics effectively. The individual will also be responsible for routinely maintaining one or more mass spectrometry instruments, ensuring they operate smoothly, and coordinating repairs if needed.

This candidate will be a good lab citizen, following all environmental health and safety guidelines and maintaining lab space and instruments in good working order. The individual will maintain excellent documentation of all work, including electronic laboratory notebooks and author technical reports.

Additionally, the individual will regularly present experimental results to technical development teams, the PAC department, and other collaborators. Candidates applying should be passionate about science, extraordinarily productive, data-driven, and should enjoy the challenges associated with sophisticated problem-solving. Candidates must be highly self-motivated and willing to work independently or as a part of multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the delivery of Genentech’s protein pharmaceutical pipeline.

Who you are

Requirements:

  • A BS or MS in biological or chemical sciences or related fields, such as chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, with 1 to 2+ years of relevant experience.

  • Large Molecule Mass Spectrometry experience.

  • Ability to follow and complete experimental protocols and test procedures and follow verbal or written instructions.

  • Works independently or under minimal direction to craft and conduct experiments and interpret, document, and communicate results.

  • Ability to work safely in the laboratory, following all environmental health and safety requirements.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, highly self-motivated, eager to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and capable of balancing multiple tasks while meeting timelines.

  • Strong collaborative skills and a passion for working in a multi-disciplinary project team environment.

  • Familiarity with various traditional analytical methods for protein characterization, such as CE, HPLC, or mass spectrometry, is required. Learns new methods (based on provided training) as needed and, with time, to become proficient in execution and troubleshooting.

Preferred:

  • Experience in developing assays for large molecules using Mass Spectrometry is highly desired.

  • Strong technical and hands-on lab skills, the ability to quickly acquire new technical skills, and experience working in research labs or industrial internships are highly desirable.

  • Experience and comfort in maintaining complex lab equipment are highly desired.

  • Prior experience with characterization of recombinant monoclonal antibodies or other protein therapeutics is helpful but not required.
