The Panther Group is seeking a W2 Contract (6 months, temp to hire) Hybrid (3 days in office, Dallas, TX) Lead Technical Analyst to support one of our partners in retail. This role does not support Visas, or sponsorship now or in the future.

About this role:

  • The person selected for this role needs to be a quick study and hit the ground running. They must have a strong analytical background and be a proven problem solver. They will be Lead Technical Analyst / Systems Engineer on the Mainframe team. The mainframe (AS/400) is being sunset in the next few years. The current Mainframe team has been around for a long time and knows the current system. The AS/400 and .Net environment will be migrated to a new Oracle platform for the retail systems.
  • The candidate would need to be able to ingest information, analysis, build out artifacts as needed, gather and build user stories for team activation, prioritization, etc
  • To be initially successful, the person for this role will need to come into a mainframe team and as the lead technical analyst, and quickly come up to speed. They will be responsible for improving the way the team articulates and manages incoming work (both unplanned and planned) and partnering with the portfolio agile coach.
  • This legacy Mainframe team will be in a state of change for a couple of years as new, modern tools and systems are implemented. The business capabilities supported by mainframe will be migrated to new systems. This person will be responsible for analyzing and diagramming the current state architecture in partnership with our architecture organization.
  • This person will be the “go to” for other teams building new systems that need to interact with and/or replace mainframe capabilities. So, it is important for this person to understand current data flows and their downstream impacts on other systems. This person will document data flows to help ensure that when new platforms are implemented, the appropriate integrations are developed and tested to replace the legacy system interfaces / data flows.


This is a key role as the Lead Technical Analyst will be responsible for:

  • Keeping track of tasks, activities, issues, changes, deliverables related to the mainframe system and migration tasks
  • They will have to quickly understand the business needs and the capabilities of the new (Oracle based) and legacy (Mainframe) systems.
  • Concurrently, they will be looking at the current state / legacy (Mainframe) business capabilities and the future state (Oracle based) to document any gaps or process changes. In doing so, the candidate must be very proficient with:
  • MS Excel to analyst data and capture information
  • MS Word to document system processes / flows / change requests
  • Data migration – knowledge of ETL processes and understand challenges of data cleansing in a system migration.
  • Application Rationalization experience is very important. Must be able to document existing functionality and identify opportunities to reduce and eliminate redundant or nonessential application.
  • Ability to talk with stakeholders / users AND with developers to bridge the gap between business needs and the technology
  • Must have exposure to and be comfortable with Mainframe systems and have the experience and ability to dig into problems through asking probing questions and guiding people to a solution (both business and technical)
  • Must be able to document process / data flows to understand and communicate inputs / outputs with expected results and interdependencies.
  • This person must be adept working in an Agile / Scrum environment AND should have a working knowledge of Kanban team approach to issue resolution / change management.
  • Must be a very meticulous and detailed person
  • Must enjoy solving problems
  • They need to help the entire team move from a ticket-centric ops team to a kanban team – heavy on collaboration across multiple portfolios/teams.


Qualifications Required:

  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience as a Lead Technical Analyst / Systems Engineer
  • Experience with Mainframe systems – does not have to be a developer
  • Highly independent and pragmatic with excellent communication skills at all levels, including Executive level communication
  • Proven ability to solve problems
  • Ability to quickly come up to speed in a new environment
  • Experience with Application Rationalization is required
  • Data Migration Experience
  • Ability to diagram data flows, system inputs/outputs, etc.
  • Passionate about system requirements gather and documentation
  • Passionate about structure and helping create order out of disparate systems/processes


Highly Desired:

  • Familiarity with retail industry applications, trends and best practices
