Assistant Director of Public Works

Job Description
Collin County is seeking applicants for Assistant Director of Public Works. Under general supervision, this position assists the Director with the operation of the Public Works and Road & Bridge departments by participating in department planning, determining operational needs, setting goals and objectives, developing and reviewing departmental policies, managing assigned staff, assisting with budget forecasting and preparation, overseeing operations in various department divisions, and serving as a liaison to vendors, citizens, state, federal and other County personnel.
This position requires a broad knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, and operating practices involved in fleet management, road construction, upgrade and maintenance, and storm water management, as well as applicable legislation, personnel management practices and strategies, public purchasing and RFP procedures, and general department budgeting forecasting/preparation. Candidates must possess a strong working ability in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as a basic ability to operate Adobe Acrobat, email and internet browser. Professionalism and strong interpersonal skills, including a high level of patience and tact, are needed to successfully interact with the various individuals encountered in the course and scope of the job, such as Road & Bridge personnel, County department heads and elected officials, citizens, vendors, state and federal personnel.
A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of six (6) years’ related experience, four (4) of which include mid to upper-level management or supervisory responsibilities is required for this position. Applicants without a degree may qualify if their combined level of education and experience is determined to be equivalent to the degree requirement. Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
