Senior Risk Manager, Finance

This job drives REI’s success by identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to ensure the company’s assets, reputation, and operations are protected. This role develops and implements risk management strategies, policies, and procedures, and collaborates with various departments to implement effective risk controls. The role leads and mentors a team of risk management professionals, providing guidance and support to ensure effective risk analysis, reporting, and claims management. Models and acts in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.
Responsibilities
- Identify loss exposures, recommend solutions, direct the structure of insurance programs, and implement approved programs and other risk mitigation strategies aligned with co-op values and strategic initiatives.
- Manage insurance carrier and broker relationships, evaluating and reporting on market conditions throughout the renewal cycle.
- Manage end-to-end claim process for all insurance policies (e.g. D&O, Worker’s Comp, Auto, Property and Casualty, Employment Practices, Cyber, Fiduciary, Crime, etc.); manage relationship with all insurance carriers, brokers, and third-party administrators.
- Inform and oversee insurance budget for all lines of coverage.
- Research insurance program structures based on company risk profile, risk appetite and market availability; negotiate most favorable terms and conditions at renewal based on appropriate levels of retained liability.
- Review, analyze, and provide actionable feedback on a wide variety of business, operations, and professional services contracts and leases, ensuring the insurance and indemnification, hold harmless provisions are fair, and appropriately transfer and mitigate third-party risk assumptions.
- Motivate and lead the team responsible for risk analysis and claims management functions.
- Collaborate with cross-divisional partners and provide training and support to employees on risk management practices and procedures.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure the company’s risk management practices remain current and effective.
- Prepare and present risk and claims reports to a variety of internal audiences.
Qualifications
- 15 years of work experience with progressively more responsibility in Risk Management or a related discipline. Must include experience in claims management and contract reviews and at least 8 years leading and managing insurance programs.
- Seven (7) years of supervisory/management experience.
- Professional designation such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or equivalent preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of risk management best practices, the insurance industry, as well as general liability and workers compensation practices.
- Ability to work effectively in an organization where risk is distributed to the business unit front line.
- Previous experience reviewing and analyzing a wide variety of business, operational, professional services, leases and other to ensure the insurance and indemnification, hold harmless provisions are fair, and appropriately transfer and mitigate third-party risks assumption through contracts.
- Experience with end-to-end claims management for all insurance lines.
- Practical knowledge of NFPA and FM Standards.
- Analytical skills: must be able to analyze data, identify trends, and use this information to make informed decisions about how to best protect the Co-op’s assets.
- Collaborates: able to work effectively with different divisions to reach decisions that benefit the co-op and implement decisions quickly and effectively.

- Training and development skills: should be able to develop and deliver training programs to ensure that all employees understand the importance of risk management and how to prevent loss.
- Project management skills: The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is essential for this role. Delivers on commitments and holds others to the same.
- Ability to travel periodically (10-12 times annually).
