Position Purpose: The Chief Financial and Operating Officer provides strategic, operational, and financial support to the Head of School for Good Shepherd Episcopal School (the “School”) including Good Shepherd Parents Day Out (“PDO”). The Chief Financial and Operating Officer is responsible for all long-range financial matters, financial and administrative objectives, policies, legal liaisoning, human resources, programs and practices which will ensure the School and PDO as a continuously sound financial institution. The position will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all operational and financial-related activities.
Essential Functions:
  1. Assists the Head of School in performing all tasks necessary to achieve the organization’s mission and is a key advisor on financial and non-financial strategic issues.
  2. Provides daily leadership, management and vision to ensure that the School and PDO has the needed operational controls and reporting procedures in place to ensure financial strength and daily operational effectiveness.
  3. Oversees and supports the Director of Enrichment in their responsibilities of managing the summer camps, after-school care, clubs, and activities.
  4. Manages all aspects of fiscal services including budget development, accounting, payroll, cash management, financial reporting, contract agreements and insurance risk management.
    1. Engages with the Assets Committee (and sub or ad hoc committees as needed) to develop short term and long term financial plans, projections and budgets.
    2. Coordinates, designs and implements internal financial reporting systems, financial controls and management information systems.
    3. Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain records.
    4. Coordinates the preparation of reports of disbursements, special analyses, and information reports for school administration and the board; presents recommendations for changes and/or improvements, monetary control and adherence to the budget.
    5. Participates with the Audit Committee to oversee and review annual audit activities and final reports as presented to the Board of Trustees.
    6. Remains current on audit best practices, school policies and procedures as well as state, federal and local laws.
  5. Maintains strong banking relationships and oversees all treasury, investment and endowment activities.
    1. In coordination with the Director of Finance oversees the management of all cash related activities.
    2. Evaluates and/or negotiates all major school contracts (including those for the parent’s organization) seeking the advice of legal counsel as needed.
    3. Participate with the Investment Committee in the oversight of all invested assets for the purpose of a long-term sustainable flow of funds from current income and capital appreciation on all assets invested.
  6. Oversees all elements of transportation, building operations, maintenance and grounds, food services, facility scheduling, health services and security.
    1. Engage with the Joint Church/School Facilities (Assets) Committee on all appropriate buildings and grounds projects and agendas.
    2. Lead in the development and implementation of capital facility planning and construction, serving as the primary liaison in Owner/Architect/Construction meetings throughout the conceptual, development and construction phases of each project.
    3. Oversees the directors of the maintenance and security teams.
    4. Provides leadership on the Critical Incident Team, planning routine crisis drills as well as responding to real incidents.
    5. In coordination with the Director of Finance, oversees the School’s health services and the independent nurses who support the School community including students, faculty and staff.
    6. Ensures compliance with all government regulations including ADA, OSHA, hazardous materials, fire/health and building inspections, and EPA issues.
  7. Oversees the administration of all Human Resource programs and policies as they relate to hiring and termination procedures, compensation, employment contracts, and employee benefits.
    1. Oversees the administration and timely payment of all payroll and benefits programs.
    2. Represents the School as Trustee on the board of ISAS Benefits Trust.
    3. Manages and administers employee benefit programs and costs.
    4. Ensures that the School’s and PDO’s personnel policies support its programs and that any actions regarding hiring, compensation, training, promotion and separation conform with state and federal requirements.
  8. Oversee all risk management including risk identification and mitigation activities.
    1. Oversee and manage all employment matters, vendor contracts, student contracts, litigation, etc.
    2. Oversees and manages the school’s health, property and casualty, liability, D&O and worker’s compensation insurance programs.
    3. Provide guidance and risk management expertise to areas of the school with increased inherent risk, including Classroom of the Earth and any other programs with overnight travel with students.
  9. Communicate, engage and interact with the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team.
  10. Manages the school’s tuition assistance program.
  11. Models behavior that reflects the highest ethical and professional standards.
Qualifications:
  1. M.B.A. or bachelor’s degree in business or accounting and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, CPA preferred.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively with school representatives, parents, students, and representatives from the community.
  3. Working knowledge of business accounting policies, procedures, practices and software programs.
  4. Ability to think and plan strategically and creatively.
  5. Ability to supervise and manage multiple functions and activities.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  1. Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
  2. Generally works in standard office conditions and climate.
  3. Works in a stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  4. May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
