Role Summary

As Associate General Counsel – Energy, Utilities & Sustainability, you will play an integral role in supporting the delivery of Rowan’s power infrastructure solutions by working across leading utilities partners to energize critical projects on time and on budget to meet Rowan’s capacity and reliability requirements, and partner with customers to meet Rowan’s sustainability objectives.

The successful candidate will have experience with large scale, energy-intensive projects and a passion for renewable energy and sustainability. In this role, you will partner with the Rowan business and work directly with power utilities during the engineering, procurement, and construction phases of a project. Internally, you will partner closely with energy strategy and project teams, as well as site development, engineering, construction, and operations team to drive successful project energization. You will also counsel partner teams as we seek innovative sustainability solutions. To succeed, candidates need to be more than just a lawyer, but also a valued thought partner to the business.


Travel: Ability to travel up to 20% to meet with utilities, developers and customers and for company gatherings


Location: Seattle, WA or Denver, CO (hybrid in-office role) strongly preferred (Remote may be considered)


Essential Responsibilities

  • Structure, draft and negotiate electricity infrastructure and supply agreements (including on-site and off-site renewable power purchase, offtake, or facilities agreements, battery energy storage contacts, and other innovative contracts) for a rapidly growing portfolio of hyperscale data center projects.
  • Structure, draft and negotiate agreements relating to water infrastructure and supply and sustainability.
  • Provide counsel on energy, water and sustainability strategy, policy, and regulatory issues and processes.
  • Support the drafting and negotiation of customer lease and development agreements, specifically the incorporation of electrical and other utility infrastructure and supply arrangements.
  • Identify and resolve business and legal risks.
  • Exercise independent judgment on legal matters to counsel business partners and management.


Education, Skills, and Experience

  • JD from an accredited U.S. law school
  • 5+ years’ of experience as an attorney or contracts manager
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage outside counsel
  • Experience providing legal counsel for data centers or other energy intensive industries
  • Experience working for or with hyperscale data center customers, including co-location and cloud companies (Preferred)
  • Knowledge or experience in real estate, project finance, and/or economic incentives is a plus
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, Excellent communication and collaboration skills, Strong organizational skills, Comfort with ambiguity, Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and highly cross-functional environment
