Description: This posting is for two academic internship opportunities in which one student will be closely integrated within our Community Impact strategy of Household Wealth (Fall-Spring) and the other will have a rotation with Household Wealth strategy in the Fall and Community Wealth in the Spring.
Household Wealth Strategy:
Addressing the wealth gap at the household level by increasing incomes, building assets, and reducing debt.
Growing household wealth is about much more than income equality.
It's about leveraging opportunities over the course of a lifetime—from paying for a college education to buying a house and saving for retirement—that allow individuals and families to build assets, have financial security, and pass wealth along to the next generation.
Background
Research shows that homeownership and entrepreneurship are the building blocks of wealth generation for households of color. In fact, homeownership is the single largest source of wealth for Black and Latinx families in the Chicago region, and the median net worth of Black entrepreneurs is 12 times that of peers who don't own a business.
The Opportunity
However, historically and to this day, people of color have encountered barriers to accessing the tools to become homeowners and business owners. To close the wealth gap at the household level, we must address the policies and practices that have expanded opportunities for white families to generate wealth while excluding Black and Latinx families.
Our Approach
The Trust's Growing Household Wealth strategy is organized around this simple equation: income plus assets, minus debt, equals wealth.
Expected Assignments:
Household Wealth Assignments (Fall):
September: Access to Capital Strategy Support
- Research local and national equity, debt financing models for homeownership and small business.
- Intern will work Sr. Director and Program Manager
September-August: Income + Assets/Homeownership Support
- Inventory and pull up stories connected to impact from previous grants that demonstrate impact on a monthly basis.
- Intern will work with Program Managers and L&I to pull up stories that can be highlighted for fundraising and external purposes.
With the Community wealth team, the intern will work ontopics, including access to capital, vacant properties, and other communitydevelopment topics with regional impact.
Other projects will be determined throughout the quarter.
Ideal majors Graduate level Public Policy; Political Science; Public Administration; Urban Planning; Social Science, Economics; Business; Social Work; Law; or other related fields.
Salary: $20.00/hour
Hours per week: 21 per week (2 in office; 1 day remote)
Internship Timeframe: October 2024 - May 2025
