Internship Title: Evaluation and Impact Measurement Internship
(Learning and Impact Team (L&I))
Description: This is an academic internship in which the intern will be closely integrated within our Learning and Impact team under the supervision of the Senior Director, managed by the Data & Analytics Manager and Data Analyst. The intern will work with the team to develop and implement data-driven approaches to document, describe and communicate the impact of the Trust's activities as reported by stakeholders (e.g., staff, grant recipients, community partners) to a range of audiences.

As a community foundation with over a century of experience addressing the region's most pressing needs, the Trust serves as a trusted partner to individuals, families, businesses, and fellow funders striving to build a stronger Chicago region, country, and world. The Trust is committed to reflecting on the impact of our actions and to revising and deepening our impact through data-driven decision making.
The Opportunity
The Learning and Impact team works with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the use of data to inform decision making and measure impact towards the Trust's strategic goal of closing the racial and ethnic wealth gap. The L&I intern will help to refine and implement the Trust's measurement framework, expand the literature base that informs the work of the Trust, analyze secondary datasets, conduct interviews and focus groups to understand community perceptions of progress, analyze and summarize quantitative and qualitative data, and support the use of data in the Trust's strategic communications about the impact of our work. The internship also provides the opportunity for the intern to explore areas of interest around the Trust's strategic priorities and apply their research, data analytics, and visualization skills to complete a project that deepens understanding of how that area of interest contributes to the Trust's approach to evaluation and impact measurement.
Our Approach
The L&I team works to ensure that all voices are represented in our impact reporting and to share our findings in an accessible manner with all stakeholders. We are committed to learning what is working and where there are opportunities to improve and to providing timely and actionable insights to guide future iterations of the Trust actions.
Expected Assignments:
- Complete literature reviews of new and existing research aligned to strategic priorities
- Support the refinement and implementation of the Trust's measurement framework
- Analyze grant recipient organizational characteristics (e.g., demographics, geographic service area) and qualitative/quantitative grant reporting
- Conduct focus groups and interviews to inform strategic priorities
- Contribute to the development of content for the Trust impact website
- Summarize findings and communicate results through presentations and written materials, including social media posts and web-based impact reporting in partnership with Strategic Communications
- Provide evaluation support to the Community Impact team and grant recipients
- Assist with learning sessions (e.g., Lunch and Learns; workshops)
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Ideal majors Public Policy; Psychology, Political Science; Public Administration; Urban Planning; Sociology; Anthropology; Economics; Social Work, Computer Science; Data Science; or other related fields.
Salary: $20.00/hour
Hours per week: 21 per week (2 days in office; 1 day remote)
Internship Timeframe: October 2024 - May 2025
