About Movement Labs

At Movement Labs, our mission is to affordably and provably scale people power.

The Movement Labs Fellowship offers the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge across an array of activities in progressive political power building, and contribute to the urgent mission of provably netting 100,000 votes for Kamala/Walz. We serve as an incubator for missing pieces of political infrastructure, combining data, technology and experimental methods to build power. We use peer-to-peer texting to help grassroots organizing, recruit candidates to run for office, and help those candidates win. We look for opportunities to work in red and rural areas, and with communities that have too often been ignored.

Movement Labs is a fast-paced environment, where we are laser-focused on testing and implementing strategies for defeating Trump and getting Democrats elected. The Fall Fellowship runs from Sept 5-Nov 22, 15-35 hours a week, depending on the needs of each team. It is possible to participate in this Fellowship while in school, you can negotiate your specific schedule with your manager.

Requirements

General skills are outlined here and specific skills are dependent on the Department (descriptions below):

  • Passionate about progressive politics and leveraging data, technology, organizing and research to build political power
  • Some experience in campaigns, organizing, politics, or policy (volunteer included)
  • Demonstrated detail-orientation with excellent follow through
  • Ability to create your own schedule, work independently and regularly communicate status updates

Departments

Our departments vary significantly. You will be embedded within a department for the duration of your fellowship. Please read through this list carefully before applying. Roles are subject to availability:

Communications: The Communications Fellow will assist with, and if able, drive the daily operations for a variety of projects ranging from communicating with journalists, growing our online presence, and crafting external newsletters. They will work on a team of three to advance strategic objectives that establish Contest Every Race as a household name in the candidate recruitment space. Prior communications experience a benefit, but not necessary. Passion for storytelling, public relations, and brand development are essential. Ability to work on projects with quick turnarounds and prioritize short term needs with long term goals. Strong instinct for identifying "newsworthy" stories. This person will be able to take a task and run with it, and have an appreciation for the importance of a strong Contest Every Race presence in the progressive space. (20 hours/week)

Digital Organizing Services: The DOS Fellow will support our client-based work by researching candidates, working with election data through VAN. A strong candidate will be a diligent researcher, creative thinking, and might have prior VAN/voter file experience, though not required. (20-30 hours/week)

Experiments: The Experiments Fellow will aid in election research related to vote by mail, voter registration, get out the vote for both primary and general elections. They will assist in setting up digital voter outreach campaigns, including internal infrastructure, cross-department communication, and drafting scripts. Your innovative efforts will directly contribute to discovering cost-effective technological solutions that energize and mobilize voters. For this role, proficiency in using Google Sheets for meticulous data collection and organization is essential. You will engage with a variety of online platforms and mediums, so adaptability and a readiness to learn new software and technologies are crucial. Familiarity with designing and implementing randomized control trials (RCTs) will be a significant advantage.(20-30 hours/week)

Political Innovation Digital Ads: The Digital Ads Fellow will work with a team of four to support ad creation to secure votes for Harris/Wal by helping to draft ad copy, briefs for external and internal use, help maintain the flow of projects. A strong candidate will be creative, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. They will be passionate about netting votes, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and might have prior experience with digital ads and media, though not required. (20-25 hours/week)

People Operations: The People Ops Fellow will work closely with the team to support the internal systems and processes that keep our organization functioning. They will help with internal communications (including building branded templates and an internal newsletter), provide administrative support on our hiring, onboarding, and offboarding processes, and conduct IT audits and create user documentation and how-to manuals. A strong candidate will have an interest in organizational operations and internal systems, and be able to take a project and run with it. They might have experience with design, writing, and video editing. (20-25 hours/week)

Data Tech: The Data Fellow would handle data request tickets from various departments within the organization, analyze and manage data using tools such as R, Python, and SQL, and may also work with spreadsheets to organize and interpret data. Tasks could include cleaning and processing data sets, generating reports, and providing insights to support strategic decision-making. Must have experience with Excel and Google Sheets, with some knowledge of SQL. The strongest candidates would have intermediate to advanced SQL knowledge, and a working knowledge of Python or R. (20-30 hours/week)

Contest Every Race: The CER Program fellow will be closely involved with the volunteer management aspect of CER. They'll be tasked with answering volunteer questions, sending out weekly emails, and auditing research that volunteers accomplish. A strong candidate will have some experience in volunteer management, Google Sheets, EveryAction, and Airtable, or be well-positioned to learn these tools quickly. (20 hours/week)

Data Experiments: The Data Experiments Fellow would help implement a key digital outreach strategy for netting votes by assisting on quality control, data management, and acquisition. A strong candidate will have SQL, Excel/Google Sheets, and Python experience. (20-30 hours/week)

Community Messaging: The Community Messenger Fellow would work on a voter outreach experiment by conducing outreach, tracking, and video review/quality control. They'll also be tapped to research potential persuasion messages, source images and news articles, and help with the execution of our fall programs. A strong candidate will by a spreadsheet wiz, and very organized. Political experience is preferred. (30 hours/week)

Graphic Design: The Graphic Design Fellow will live within the People Ops team but support a variety of graphic design needs across the organization. A strong candidate will have a graphic design experience and a good eye for the design needs of organizations. (10-30 hours/week)

Black-Led Organizing: The BLO Fellow will assist with communications, research, client & grant cycle management, building campaigns in Asana and Airtable as well as other ad hoc needs. There will be opportunities for leadership development, connecting with Black Led orgs and organizers nationwide, ideating new projects, and assisting with building up the infrastructure of the department. (30 hours/week)

Digital Organizing: The Digital Organizing Fellows will be helping with a variety of tasks including writing 1st drafts of SMS scripts, helping to recruit, manage, and train volunteers for the incubator team, and various other project tasks as need. Ideal candidates will have strong written and verbal communication skills, be creative, detail-oriented, and passionate about electing Kamala Harris. They will also be adaptable with a great attitude. Experience with digital or distributed organizing is a plus--and customer service is an easily transferrable skill (10-20 hours/week)

Benefits

Compensation:

$20/hour for up to 35 hours per week (may vary with team workload), includes sick time accrual.

While this is a short term fellowship with the purpose of providing job training, skill building, and professional experience for people early in their career or who are looking for a career change, successful fellows are occasionally offered full-time employment.

In addition to the hourly compensation, fellows will participate in regular skills trainings and leadership development programming.
