Experienced Deckhand

Deckhands are primarily responsible for the safety of fellow crewmembers, the vessel, the cargo, and the environment. They perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance. Tasks are carried out in all weather conditions, both outside and within the confines of the vessel, while navigating the western rivers.
Responsibilities:
- Build and break tow effectively.
- Inspect, correct, and/or notify others of any conditions that affect the safety of individuals or cargo.
- Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and landing work, ensuring the proper fitting of cables, wires, and lines, and use appropriate tools for adjustments as needed.
- Safely secure barges with cables, wires, and lines while being environmentally conscious.
- Perform basic vessel maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and basic engine room maintenance.
- Communicate clearly on a VHF radio; understand and implement instructions provided by the vessel Captain.
- Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies.
- Responsible for maintaining personal hygiene; ensure the cleanliness and safety of own bunkroom and collaborate with the crew to uphold similar standards in public spaces.
- Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard and abandon ship duties as assigned on the Station Bill.
Minimum Requirements:
- Strictly follow all CTC policies, as well as adhere to USCG and federal regulations.
- Must possess or ability to possess Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)
- Pass pre-employment drug test and submit to random DOT testing requirements.
- Pass pre-employment physical.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license for operation of any of the company’s vehicles. (Gulf Division only)
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Prior experience in a similar position within the marine transportation industry
- Prior experience in a safety sensitive position
Physical Requirements:
The unpredictable, ever-changing, and inherently dangerous nature of towboat operations requires the crew members to be physically qualified to ensure his/her own safety, as well as that of the vessel and entire crew. Specific physical requirements include:
- Traverse boats, barges, and tows a minimum of two (2) miles per day, including on wet or slick surfaces.
- Transport equipment of 60 to 100 pounds up to 1000 feet.
- Ascend/Descend a 90 degree ladder up to 40 feet.
- Move, transport, and position equipment up to 100 pounds.
- Position self to move through 18-inch diameter hatch.
- Move two (2) feet horizontally and vertically.
- Maintain constant communication with crew members.
- Ability to recognize and identify distant objects and recognize distances between objects.
- Constantly work in outdoor weather conditions.
- Work shifts a min. of 12 hrs. (could be up to 15).
Applicable to crews assigned to the gulf division only:
- Maintain ongoing respirator fit clearance and undergo annual fit testing.
- Completion of pre-employment Benzene clearance required, followed by participation in the annual Benzene Monitoring Program.
