Job Description

Campbell Transportation Company, Inc. is seeking a skilled Deckhand to join our team. As a Deckhand, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of fellow crew members, the vessel, cargo, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and break tow effectively to ensure safe navigation.
  • Inspect and correct any conditions that may affect safety, and notify others as necessary.
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and landing work, ensuring proper cable, wire, and line fitting, and using appropriate tools for adjustments.
  • Safely secure barges with cables, wires, and lines while being environmentally conscious.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and engine room maintenance.
  • Communicate clearly on a VHF radio and understand and implement instructions from the vessel Captain.
  • Use safety equipment as required by company policies.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and ensure the cleanliness and safety of your bunkroom and public spaces.
  • Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard, and abandon ship duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Follow all CTC policies and USCG and federal regulations.
  • Possess or be able to possess a Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Pass pre-employment drug test and submit to random DOT testing requirements.
  • Pass pre-employment physical.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license for company vehicle operation (Gulf Division only).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience in a similar position within the marine transportation industry.
  • Prior experience in a safety-sensitive position.

Physical Requirements:

The unpredictable nature of towboat operations requires crew members to be physically qualified to ensure their own safety and that of the vessel and crew. Specific physical requirements include:

  • Traversing boats, barges, and tows up to 2 miles per day in various weather conditions.
  • Transporting equipment up to 100 pounds over 1000 feet.
  • Ascending and descending 90-degree ladders up to 40 feet.
  • Moving and positioning equipment up to 100 pounds.
  • Positioning yourself to move through an 18-inch diameter hatch.
  • Maintaining constant communication with crew members.
  • Recognizing and identifying distant objects and distances between objects.
  • Working in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Working shifts of at least 12 hours (up to 15 hours).

Applicable to Gulf Division crews only:

  • Maintaining ongoing respirator fit clearance and annual fit testing.
  • Completing pre-employment Benzene clearance and participating in the annual Benzene Monitoring Program.
