GENERAL SUMMARY This is responsible, general duty and investigatory law enforcement work involving the protection of life/property, treaty rights resources, and the preservation of the peace for the Nisqually Indian Community. It is established to protect the Nisqually Indian Community and treaty rights resources. Work is performed in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Nisqually Public Safety Department, and in compliance with governing Tribal, federal, state, and local laws.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed if such duties relate to the position.

  • Patrol usual and accustomed areas within the exterior boundaries of the Nisqually Indian Reservation by vehicle, foot, or watercraft to deter and detect crime and violations of treaty rights. Enforce laws and ordinances; respond to crime scenes and collisions; perform investigations; and aids persons in need of assistance.
  • Perform basic law enforcement duties to include effecting arrests, forcibly if necessary; pursuing and subduing individuals; and securing crime and collision scenes. Serve warrants and legal process. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time. Exercise independent judgment in determining when to detain, search, and arrest; and the appropriate level of force required in any situation. Respond to crime reports; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; and gather evidence. Complete incident and arrest reports.
  • Perform security checks and health and welfare visits. Processes and transports arrestees, juvenile detainees, and individuals presenting as mentally ill using appropriate restraints.
  • Operate a law enforcement vehicle during day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in variable and adverse road and weather conditions.
  • Effectively perform duties, and responds and communicates appropriately, when confronted by individuals who may be antagonistic, hostile and combative.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must have an acceptable ranking on an examination based on knowledge, skills, and abilities to include an oral, written, and physical agility exam.
  • Must have no felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend them to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, or any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph and psychological evaluation, and medical exam.
  • Must successfully qualify with a duty firearm prior to performing the duties of this position.
  • Acceptance to and successful completion of the FLETC Academy or equivalent academy is a condition of continuing employment.
  • Must be familiar with operation of land/watercraft assigned to the Nisqually Tribal Police Department or be capable of learning the operation within 30 days of hire.

  • Manage face-to-face interactions and confrontations with angry, hostile, depressed and/or otherwise emotionally distraught suspects/inmates.
  • Perform strenuous physical tasks, such as pursuing fleeing suspects on foot and arresting suspects who resist.

This position has a variety of physical requirements of varying degrees based on numerous differing work circumstances. Required physical activities include walking, standing, sitting, digital dexterity, talking, hearing and seeing. A Police Officer will assist in any emergency situation, and must maintain physical ability to effect a forcible arrest or deal with physical, confrontational or combative situations including use of reasonable force up to and including deadly force. Required physical activities during those times are running, jumping, balancing, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, reaching, lifting, carrying, dragging, throwing, pushing/pulling both objects and people. A Police Officer must be able to clearly distinguish and identify colors, accurately and safely discharge a firearm (either hand) with unassisted vision, safely drive a vehicle with unassisted vision, clearly discriminate electronic, mechanical and human sounds, and operate other required equipment in a safe and lawful manner for the protection/safety of the public, self and of other employees. Incumbents must be able to wear protective equipment as required by the department and must be able to use equipment associated with a jail environment in addition to operation of a personal computer and related office equipment necessary to perform the primary responsibilities of the job.
