Summary:

Primary: This is a position in Treat Rights enforcement, established to protect the Nisqually Indian community and treaty rights resources primarily by investing reported and suspected violations of the Nisqually tribal codes, annual fishing and hunting regulation, and emergency regulations. May work irregular hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and outdoors during all weather conditions; may also be required to perform limited patrol duties. The incumbent is appointed by, and reports to, the chief of police.

Secondary: provide a variety of community services related to law enforcement, such as conflict mediation and victim referral and provide relief to commissioned law enforcement personnel in transporting prisoners, animal control calls for service and processing reports and records.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Primary: investigates Treaty rights violations, questions witnesses and suspects, corroborates testimony, searches persons and scenes of crimes, gathers evidence and presents it for trial, writes citations, and makes arrests when necessary. Patrols usual and accustomed areas both within and outside the exterior boundaries of the Nisqually Indian reservation. By vehicle, foot or water craft, to enforce appropriate laws, codes, and treaty rights regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Secondary: Individuals assigned to this classification are expected to apply knowledge of conflict resolutions and the availability of various human services to operate with a considerable amount of independence in situations which can be stressful. Individual are responsible to the chief of police thought the normal chain of command in the police department. Individuals are responsible to apply word processing and database computer applications to situations requiring significant attention to detail. Responsible for exercising tact and discretion in work situations requiring adherence to strict confidentiality, cultural and traditional values.

Examples of work:

  • Enforce Nisqually treaty rights established to protect the Nisqually Indian community and treaty rights resources.
  • Enforce animal control codes, including impoundment of animals, and removing deceased, injured, vicious and/or stray animals within the boundaries of the Nisqually reservations.
  • Mediate verbal disputes among family members, neighbor's landlords and tenants, merchants and customers in situations that do not involve physical violence. Seek assistance of appropriate law enforcement officers if situations should escalate to include physical violence.
  • Assist police officers with the investigation of reported incidents of child abuse, neglect and abandonment and take children into protective custody at the direction of a police officer or ICW worker; conduct follow-up investigations of lost and runaway children.
  • Investigate reports of juvenile disturbance and other juvenile's problems; may provide or arrange for counseling for juveniles concerning problems with school, employment, family or adjustment in the community.
  • Provide transportation in indigent persons involved in police related activities and to juveniles between the youth service Center and their own home or receiving homes, utilizing tribal vehicle.

 

 

 

 

  • As assigned, interview complainants; provide information on laws and codes; and resolve problems within scope of knowledge, or refer to appropriate agencies.
  • Take reports on found or missing property and property damage.
  • Assist persons with alcohol and related problems to receive medical care and transportation to the appropriate agencies.
  • Conduct crime prevention activities such as home security inspections, assisting Tribal elders in obtaining locks for their homes; may conduct crime prevention education programs for neighborhoods and businesses; may assist with block watches.
  • Provide follow-up assistance to victims of crisis situations, and to individuals with serious personal, social or law enforcement problems.
  • Act as department liaison with various community organizations.
  • Perform clerical duties, utilizing word processing and database computer applications as required by supervisor and/or to assist with the work load of the Police Department.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum requirements:
  2. Must be 21 years of age, or older, proof of age requires.
  3. Must have physical strength and agility sufficient to perform duties of this position, successfully pass physical agility test and must not have any medical or physical conditions that would limit employee's capacity of performing duties of this position. If applicant let previous employment due to medical reasons, a physicians release will be required.
  4. Have good vision and hearing.
  5. Demonstrate ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  6. Have ability to work alone.
  7. Requires valid Washington States Drivers License and a driving record free of significant violations.
  8. Be bondable.
  9. Have no felony convictions, or serious violations of moral character.
  10. Must have no misdemeanor arrest record or convictions within the past (1) year
  11. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain a valid first aid Card.
  12. High school diploma or general education development (GED)
  13. Must successfully pass police officer A-2 written examination.
  14. Must successfully pass the Nisqually Personnel board oral interview.
  15. Must successfully pass a psychological oral examination, the Minnesota multi-phasic personality Inventory test, and behavioral characteristic Assessment test, for police officer.
  16. Must successfully pass a polygraph examination prior to or during employment.
  17. Must successfully pass background investigation
  18. Must successfully qualify with firearm and other assigned weapons prior to performing duties of this position.
  19. Must have a valid Washington State driver`s license and be insurable under the Nisqually Indian Tribe`s insurance policy.
  20. General Requirements:
  21. Familiarity with the operations of land/watercraft assigned to the law enforcement sections, and be capable of operating those craft with less than (30) days of training.
  22. Requires knowledge and experience with word processing and database computer applications, with ability attention to detail.
  23. Requires knowledge of conflict resolutions techniques.
  24. Requires knowledge of the availability of various external human service agencies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Requires ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy and to initiate and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, supervisors, human services agencies, other tribal agencies and the community in general.
  2. Requires knowledge and the ability to enforce treaty rights, animal control codes and to deal with the animals involved in animal control activities.
  3. Requires knowledge, ability and desires to work with juveniles, family and other citizens in situations involving dispute resolutions and counseling.
  4. Requires competence in clerical matters, including report record preparation and dissemination and operation of office equipment assigned to the department; requires the ability to adapt to the new equipment which the department may acquire.
  5. Requires ability to set workload priorities and to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  6. Special Requirements:

Requires possession of a graduation certificate from state of Washington certified reserve police officer academy or have completed the WSCJTC 44- hour basic police academy, or the equivalent, with no break in service of more than 24 month if not currently employed as a wildlife or law enforcement office.
