The Center for Workforce Inclusion is recruiting for a Community Engagement Specialist position within the Experience Service Program (ESP) through a grant administered program that provides support to the United States Department of the Interior, National Capital Parks-East in Washington, DC.

Role and Responsibilities: Serves as community engagement subject matter expert and collaborates with National Capital Parks-East staff and partners to develop and implement community engagement efforts across a diverse set of parks and historic sites within various communities.

  • Works with NACE staff and partners to plan, organize, and implement a variety of community engagement opportunities (in neighboring communities, new NACE events or or to retool/enhance existing events) to encourage strategic community engagement toward strengthening relationships with the communities in which NACE sites are embedded.
  • Analyze stakeholder and public reaction to communication efforts to determine effectiveness of communication strategies and adjust accordingly.
  • Provide on site support and engagement with NACE staff and park partners.
  • Work with NACE staff to develop and implement strategic public relations and communications plans, including the use of social media (Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Flickr, US Interior Steller, blogs, etc.).
  • As needed in support of duties, conducts general research using primary sources on a variety of park related themes related to history, archeology, cultural and natural resources management, and natural history in order inform community engagement efforts.
  • May perform other duties required to support the operation of the division.

Qualifications and Education Requirements: Successful candidates must meet the age criteria of being 55 years of age or older and eligible to work in the United States; able to pass a Federal Background check; BA/BS in community development, community organizing, public administration or a related field; 5-10 years in related field; Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others inside and outside of the NPS community, including non-profit organizations, special interest groups, businesses, and the local communities. Knowledge and ability in communicating and implementing ideas that lead to cooperative plans with multiple and diverse organizations, groups, and individuals. Strong cultural competence and ability to address different values in park planning, use and programming. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience using inclusive language reflective of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility principles. Proven ability to work with wide range of people who often hold diverse and conflicting opinions, and ability to attain their engagement. Experience with the tools and techniques of civic engagement. Office work and onsite visits to learn park resources, walking trails and other outdoor areas.

Hours & Compensation: Part-Time position working 24 hours per week @ $35 per hour; 6-12 month project.
