Job Description: Financial Controller
Position Overview: The Financial Controller plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations of our vertically integrated construction and real estate company. The Controller is responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls within the organization. This position requires a thorough understanding of accounting principles, proficiency in excel software, and strong leadership and teamwork skills to effectively work with the accounting team.

Key Responsibilities


Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly and monthly financial statements for multiple related entities, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.


Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Ensure appropriate budgets are made
  • Monitor budget performance and provide regular updates to management.
  • Prepare financial forecasts to support strategic decision-making.


Cash Management:

  • Manage cash flow and liquidity to meet operational needs and debt obligations.
  • Implement effective cash management policies and procedures.
  • Monitor banking activities and reconcile bank accounts.

 

Accounts Payable and Receivable:

  • Oversee the accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, vendor payments, and tenant billing.
  • Ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions.


Property/ Capex Accounting:

  • Maintain property-level accounting records and ledgers.
  • Review property financials for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with property managers to address accounting issues and discrepancies.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Establish and maintain internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Coordinate with external accountants on audits, reviews and other tax return engagements.
  • Implement recommendations to improve internal controls and operational efficiency.

Team Leadership:

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and support to foster professional growth.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages teamwork and accountability.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to ensure high performance standards are met.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Real estate and/or Construction experience a plus
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate industry accounting standards.
  • Experience with related party transactions maintained in a single accounting system.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and a track record of building and motivating high-performing teams.
