Experience

A minimum of five (5) years’ of experience in residential mortgage underwriting, including FHA (DE), VA, and USDA, is normally required.

Preferred Skills

  • Good interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of real estate lending regulations and procedures.

Role and Responsibilities

Responsible for underwriting conventional and government loans following established company, agency, and investor guidelines and procedures; coordinating work within the unit or department, as well as with other units or departments; complying with operating policies and procedures established for the real estate loan function.

Essential Duties

  1. Performs underwriting duties of which the following are illustrative:
  1. Reviews and analyzes appraisal and inspection reports and other documentation; determines the appropriate information to input into the automated underwriting systems; reviews findings, following investor guidelines.
  2. Computes qualifying ratios and analyzes creditworthiness.
  3. Reviews the real estate loan files after additional documentation has been received; ensures completeness of loan files and consistency with terms of the product by reconciling income, appraisal value, credit history, and other necessary information.
  4. Uses underwriting authority to disposition loan application.
  5. Coordinates with the loan officers and processors during the loan process; communicates with all parties to apprise them of application status.
  6. Responds to inquiries related to underwriting guidelines and procedures.
  7. Makes credit decisions for approval or rejection of loans within defined limit of authority.
  8. Performs any and all assigned duties in order to support residential mortgage lending.

  1. Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management, overall safety and soundness, and the bank’s compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. TRID, RESPA, Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.

  1. Coordinates departmental tasks with coworkers inside and outside the department in order to ensure an efficient process and the completion of essential tasks needing proper segregation of duties.

  1. Reports pertinent information to the immediate supervisor as requested, or according to an established schedule; complies information as necessary or as directed and provides date to appropriate bank personnel.

  1. Responds to any audits, post-closing, insuring issues for files.

  1. Communicates with management and staff personnel in order to integrate goals and activities.

  1. Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from other bank personnel, customers, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.

  1. Provides leadership, on-the-job training, and technical guidance to Mortgage Loan Originators, Processor, and Closers.

  1. Maintains appropriate records and provides assigned reports.

  1. Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment that is free of sexual harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the work place.

Ancillary Duties
  1. Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual or departmental circumstances.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stairs to move through the different floors of the location.
