Due to continued growth, we have an opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to join our firm as Area Manager for Southern Wisconsin based out of our Kenosha or Milwaukee offices. The ideal candidate must have a strong background in project management, leadership and business development within the consulting engineering industry and be able to provide both strategic and tactical leadership to all aspects of the engineering business (transportation, civil/environmental, municipal, mechanical, electrical, structural). A deep understanding of the Southern Wisconsin/Northern Illinois market (which extends from northern Chicagoland to north of Milwaukee), consisting of public sector clients is required. Demonstrated ability to manage staff, provide leadership and mentoring, and develop capabilities and identify opportunities for all technical teams are key for success in this role.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manages the business and technical operations of the entire Area across multiple disciplines.
- Responsible for project performance metrics for the Area and oversight of planning, design, and construction services for a variety of engineering projects and clients.
- Identifies and develops pursuit strategies including teaming with other firms and sub-consultants to win key projects within the Area.
- Develops and manages the workload forecast for the Area and balances work across teams.
- Identifies staffing needs and skills gaps and works with HR to identify and pursue candidates.
- Ensures that QA/QC, billing, and invoicing are done per company guidelines for all projects.
- Works with project managers to manage project scope, client requests and develop corrective action plans as needed.
- Mentors staff and ensures that appropriate coaching and development activities are taking place.
- Provides input for staff promotions and the annual salary and bonus plans.
- Participates in professional organizations and events to advance the firm’s image and develop relationships with clients, prospects, and partners.
- Functions as office manager with responsibility for facility maintenance, leases, and local events.
- Promotes and maintains a positive office culture and environment including support of office events, meetings, and collaboration.
Position Requirements
- B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline and WI/IL PE license is preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience managing projects and teams for a variety of public sector civil engineering projects is required.
- Ability to lead marketing efforts for multiple disciplines and project types throughout the Area.
- Experience with the planning, design, and construction of engineering projects in the following areas are desired; local roads, water distribution, sanitary sewer, stormwater/drainage, water/wastewater facilities and mechanical/electrical.
- Deep experience with project management functions including project scoping, schedule, budget development and QA/QC.
- Knowledgeable of the capabilities of engineering design and modeling tools including Excel, ORD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Arc GIS, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HEC-GeoRAS, XP-SWMM.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to make public presentations and lead internal initiatives and staff meetings.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the area’s offices as needed.
