Job Summary: The General Manager orchestrates the refuse and recycling operations at Apex Waste Solutions, coupling strategic foresight with a deep understanding of business acumen, leadership dynamics, and project management principles aligned with industry standards. Charged with managing risk and controlling growth, the General Manager works alongside C-suite executives to refine and realize the company’s vision, ensuring industry standards are surpassed and innovation is continuous.
Key Responsibilities:
● Business Acumen & Strategic Influence: Works with the CFO to spearhead financial modeling and sensitivity analysis to forecast and prepare for economic variances. Integrates Balanced Scorecard approach to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improving internal and external communications and monitoring organizational performance against strategic goals.
● Leadership & Development: Works with the COO to develop and instill a leadership competency framework within the organization to drive leadership development. Regularly assesses and develops the leadership team's capabilities through coaching and formal training, ensuring readiness for current and future business challenges.
● Project Management Integration: Works with C-suite officers to select and direct the deployment of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to streamline operations and support real-time decision-making. Enforces adherence to the PMBOK guidelines for consistent project management practices across the organization.
● Controlled Growth Management: Coordinates with C-suite officers to conduct competitive analysis and market positioning to strategically position the company for controlled expansion. Develops and executes risk management strategies using tools such as SWOT analysis and risk heat maps to ensure that growth initiatives are well-calibrated.
● Financial Oversight & Risk Management: Works closely with the CFO to implement financial risk management policies and procedures, including credit risk, market risk, and operational risk, aligning with COSO framework standards. Utilizes financial management software to track and report on fiscal performance, informing strategic financial decisions.
● Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinates with the President, C-suite officers and select consultants to align departmental objectives with organizational goals, reporting on performance metrics, and strategic achievements. Engages in regular policy and strategy development sessions to ensure cohesive leadership across the company.
● Operations & Compliance Mastery: Employs Six Sigma and other Lean methodologies to drive process improvement, operational efficiency, and safety. Enforces OSHA standards and stays abreast of legislative changes that may impact operational compliance and safety standards.
● Data-Driven Decision Making: Leverages advanced data analytics assets and tools and BI technologies to process and analyze large data sets, generating actionable insights to guide strategic initiatives. Implements select industry standard KPIs such as service delivery efficiency, customer churn rate, and route optimization to objectively measure and enhance operational performance.
● Human Resources Stewardship: Works with the VP of HR to drive the implementation of an HR Information System (HRIS) to facilitate strategic human capital management. Ensures the integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) best practices into all HR policies and procedures.
● Client Relationship Excellence: Works with the VP of Sales to establish a Client Success Team framework to proactively address and resolve top-tier commercial customer challenges, ensuring retention and satisfaction. Employs CRM systems to track client interactions and feedback, leveraging this data to improve service offerings.
● Reporting & Transparency: Develops financial and operational reporting protocols in line with GAAP and IFRS standards for internal and external stakeholders. Ensures the use of project management dashboards to provide real-time data on the status of various initiatives to the President and C-suite team.
● Sustainability Leadership: Monitors and integrates emerging technologies such as zero-emission vehicles and waste-to-energy conversion to maintain industry leadership in sustainability. Represents the company at industry trade shows, presenting the company’s sustainability initiatives and engaging with thought leaders to stay at the forefront of green technology.
● Technology & Innovation Oversight: Stays informed on the latest operational technologies, assessing their applicability to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency. Oversees the deployment of IoT devices and fleet management software to optimize logistics and real-time tracking of assets.
● Industry Engagement & Presence: Takes an active role in attending and presenting at industry conferences, establishing thought leadership, and forging strategic alliances. Works collaboratively with sales and account management to facilitate new business development and to ensure high-profile customer issues are addressed with priority and expertise.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in business management or related field, or equivalent experience.
● 10+ years of progressive industry experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
● Demonstrated expertise in project management methodologies.
● Strong business acumen with a strategic mindset and risk management capabilities.
● Exceptional leadership qualities with a proven track record of team development.
● Proficiency in Computer Office Tools and industry-specific software is required.
