PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND POSITION OVERVIEW

The Middle School Counselor works collaboratively with school leadership, students, parents, teachers, school support staff, and fellow elementary school counselors to help our students achieve the highest degree of academic, emotional and behavioral success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Holding all students to high expectations and determining appropriate strategies and interventions that will allow students to academically excel and grow personally and socially. 
  • Supporting the needs of a diverse student population
  • Developing advisory lessons and social and emotional health curriculum for the faculty, and training faculty on the implementation of these lessons as well as other in-class interventions and supports
  • Supporting families with guidance and strategies to use at home; communicating regularly with families as appropriate
  • Providing high-quality counseling sessions for students, individually and in groups, to meet the needs of students with IEPs and to support at-risk students
  • Coordinating the high school application and admission process, including advising students and families on their options, working with advisors to support student completion of applications, building partnerships with high schools, and keeping staff and leadership updated on requirements and recommendations for high school admissions
  • Supporting the school leadership in managing crisis situations as they arise, in rare cases after normal school hours
  • Participating in the creation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and couseling reports
  • Serving as a member of the school’s Holistic Support Team; supporting through making recommendations and analyzing student data
  • Maintaining clinical records on case-management services, which includes documenting counseling sessions, and other services 
  • Providing feedback to teachers, deans and school leaders on how to best support students, including those who do not receive direct counseling services

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Education (Ed.M.) in School Counseling required 
  • Minimum of two years of counseling experience in an urban school setting preferred
  • Must have provisional school certification 
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish preferred
  • Shared dedicated to GCCS’s mission and values
