POSITION: Temporary Planning Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Planning Department
REPORTS TO: Principal Planner
WAGE: $17.25/Hour
TIME TYPE: Part Time
POSITION TYPE: Hybrid
POSITION TERM: Temporary position of not more than four (4) months in duration with
flexible work period not to commence before July 8, 2024, and concluding no
later than October 31, 2024, with a maximum work week not to exceed 20
hours/week. This position is not eligible for benefits.

SUMMARY:
The Planning Intern will support the Planning Department with various research, documentation,
and administrative tasks. This role provides an opportunity to gain hands on experience in local
government operations, research methodologies, and planning practices. The intern will work
closely with Department staff to fulfill project requirements and contribute to the overall goals of
the City. This is a temporary position and is not eligible for City provided benefits.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist Planning staff in collecting and analyzing data, and preparing materials for ongoing
long range projects, including the 2026 Comprehensive Plan, Missing Middle Housing
update, and Climate Planning updates
• Assist Planning staff with the facilitation and development of GIS materials, including
updating of existing City facilitated data sets, collection of geospatial utility asset data, and
development of story maps
• Assist Planning staff in the development, preparation, and facilitation of meetings and
meeting materials for public Commissions
• Creation and development of guidance materials using existing development codes and
processes
• Conduct basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, physical and digital file
management, organization, and cataloging
• Assist with other departmental duties as determined


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Proficiency in MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Working knowledge of ArcGIS suite
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
• Familiarity with general office procedures: Answering phones, copying, filing, etc.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
• Basic understanding of planning principles


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• GED or equivalent
• Currently enrolled Graduate or Undergraduate student or recent graduate of Community
Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, or related degree program
• Motivated self-starter able to work independently
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong research and analytical skills

Valid driver’s license required. Must have the ability to attend meetings, events, and workshops
outside of regular work hours.
