East End Food Co-op, which has a current Membership of more than 16,000, has been growing steadily in the Point Breeze North neighborhood of Pittsburgh since 1980.


Job Purpose & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager (GM) will lead the cooperative in all departments, including store operations, finance, marketing, merchandising, technology, and human resources. Along with the Management Team, the GM will lead the cooperative through an increasingly competitive consumer market. Performance will be measured based on asset protection, financial conditions, business planning and financial budgeting, staff treatment and compensation, customer service effectiveness and Member-Owner engagement. An experienced, visionary leader is required to foster collaboration in an environment that includes vital constituencies - a Board, Member-Owners, Employees, and the community at large.

Requirements:


Required qualifications:

  • Proven leadership skills
  • Prior bottom-line accountability for a business, preferably larger than $15 million in annual sales volume
  • Personal/Professional ethics aligned with traditional cooperative principles
  • Proven ability to articulate a coherent cooperative business vision that unites the various constituencies within a consumer co-op.
  • Proven strategic planning effectiveness
  • Ability to motivate, lead, and coordinate staff, prioritizing cooperation
  • Ability to sustain an effective Management Team
  • Experience with hiring, training, evaluating, compensating, and terminating
  • Operating, capital, and cash budgeting experience
  • Proven ability to make sound financial decisions
  • Experience working with multiple constituencies within a cooperative business enterprise
  • Understanding of marketing and merchandising in a highly competitive urban grocery market
  • Demonstrated organizational ability in developing and overseeing administrative systems
  • Proven ability to engage and work with a diverse population in an urban environment
  • Proven ability to meet Management reporting requirements, presenting regular written and spoken information to the Co-op community
  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback without defensiveness

Desired Experience:


  • Retail management experience, preferably in grocery, natural foods, or food co-op (as general manager, store manager, operations manager, or district manager)
  • Experience managing new store opening/renovation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working with technology
  • Knowledge of natural foods and ability to interpret financial statements to laypeople
  • Substantive experience working within a Policy Governance system
  • Management experience within a union work environment
