Safety/HSE Manager

As a Safety/HSE Manager at Constructable, you provide support towards the company goals regarding safety, training, job site visits, and new hire orientation. You will ensure compliance of safety policies, procedures and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).  


Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program Development: Developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs tailored to the specific needs of the construction project. This includes creating safety policies, procedures, and guidelines. Work closely with Human Resources department to ensure timely submission of safety violations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with all relevant safety regulations, codes, and standards set forth by government agencies, industry organizations, and project specifications.
  • Training and Education: Organizing and conducting safety training sessions for workers, subcontractors, supervisors, and other project stakeholders. This includes orientation for new hires, specialized training for hazardous tasks, and ongoing education to reinforce safety principles. Coach, teach and mentor staff on project safety and take appropriate action in identifying and providing corrective action to eliminate potential sources of error.
  • Risk Management: Identifying potential hazards and assessing risks associated with construction activities, equipment, and materials. Implementing controls and mitigation measures to minimize risks and prevent accidents.
  • Safety Inspections and Audits: Conducting regular inspections and safety audits of the construction site to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-compliance issues. Developing action plans to address findings and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly.
  • Accident Investigation: Leading investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes and contributing factors. Developing recommendations for corrective actions and preventive measures to improve safety performance. Work closely with Director of Operations and Superintendents to ensure safety procedures are implemented and monitored every step of the production process.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Developing and implementing emergency response plans for various scenarios, such as fires, medical emergencies, or natural disasters. Coordinating drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of emergency procedures and enhance readiness. Respond to critical incidents and assume control of incident scenes.
  • Safety Communication: Facilitating clear communication about safety policies, procedures, and expectations among all project stakeholders. Providing guidance and support to supervisors and workers to promote a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Safety Technology and Innovation: Staying updated on emerging safety technologies, best practices, and industry trends. Implementing innovative solutions to enhance safety performance and efficiency on the construction site.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Monitoring safety performance metrics and trends to evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs and initiatives. Generating reports and analysis to communicate safety performance to project management and stakeholders.
  • Contractor Management: Collaborating with contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure they comply with safety requirements and standards. Providing guidance and support to subcontractors to promote a safe work environment.
  • Site Visits: Must be able to visit sites periodically and coach site superintendents on safety.

 

Requirements:

As a Safety/HSE Manager, you possess extensive experience in managing office and project site safety and should have these additional prerequisite skills, abilities, and qualifications.

 

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, construction management, engineering, or a related field is typically required.
  • Certifications: Require certifications related to construction safety management, such as the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), or similar credentials.
  • Experience: Previous experience in construction safety management or a related field is often required.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: A thorough understanding of federal, state, and local safety regulations and codes applicable to the construction industry is essential. This includes regulations from agencies such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and other relevant authorities.
  • Risk Management Skills: Strong skills in identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with construction activities, equipment, and materials. This includes the ability to develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are crucial for effectively communicating safety policies, procedures, and expectations to project stakeholders. The ability to lead safety meetings, conduct training sessions, and communicate with workers at all levels is essential. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Leadership Abilities: Strong leadership qualities and the ability to lead and motivate teams to prioritize safety and adhere to established safety protocols. The Construction Safety Manager should be able to influence behavior and foster a culture of safety on the construction site. Multitask and manage competing priorities.
  • Analytical Skills: The ability to analyze safety data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to improve safety performance. This includes conducting accident investigations, analyzing root causes, and developing preventive measures.
  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is essential for identifying potential hazards and ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. The Construction Safety Manager should be thorough in conducting inspections and audits to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in using computer software and technology tools for safety management, record-keeping, and data analysis. This may include safety management software, Microsoft Office suite, and other relevant applications.
  • Interpersonal Skills: The ability to build positive relationships with project stakeholders, including contractors, subcontractors, project managers, and regulatory agencies. Collaboration and teamwork are essential for effective safety management on construction projects.
