We’re looking for a Junior Communications Engineer specializing in the research, design, development, and maintenance of Cable Transmission Systems, particularly focusing on fiber backbone installation, inspection, and testing to work at our client's location in Los Angeles, CA. This role also requires a solid general knowledge of rail communication systems including IT, radio, CCTV, telecommunications, and communication. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Cable Transmission Systems:

  • Design, produce, assess, and implement system designs and test procedures specifically for fiber backbone installation and maintenance.
  • Install and maintain fiber optic communication systems, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Identify and diagnose faults in fiber transmission systems, effectively troubleshooting and resolving issues.
  • Assist in the development and deployment of fiber optic communication (voice/data/video) solutions.
  • Perform periodic network performance and capacity analysis, focusing on the fiber backbone to ensure system sustainability, and develop/implement a capacity planning strategy.

Rail Communications Systems:

  • Participate in the design and maintenance of co-existing wired and wireless networks within rail communication systems, under the guidance of senior engineers. 
  • Review RF requirement documents such as IRDs and ICDs to ensure they meet the specific needs of rail communication projects. 
  • Assist in architecture renovations and updates for rail communication systems, leveraging new technology and safety/security techniques applicable to control systems networks. 
  • Design and develop electronic components to enhance rail communication systems, including wired and wireless communication devices, sensors, and other related devices.

General Responsibilities:

  • Install and maintain general communication systems, ensuring continuous performance monitoring. 
  • Consult with suppliers, customers, directors, and other teams to ensure seamless communication and project progress. 
  • Participate in the identification and diagnosis of faults across various communication systems, troubleshooting, and resolving issues. 
  • Manage virtual and in-person meetings efficiently, preparing and delivering presentations to prospective clients and internal executives.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Cable Transmission Systems:

  • Intermediate knowledge of fiber optic (SONET) and Ethernet communications backbone.
  • Proficiency in designing, installing, and maintaining fiber optic systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills specific to fiber optic transmission systems.
  • Ability to perform network performance and capacity analysis, with a focus on fiber backbone systems.
  • Experience with fiber optic cable splicing, termination, and testing.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for fiber optic network design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with fiber optic testing equipment, such as OTDR and power meters.
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber optic network schematics and blueprints.
  • Understanding of the impact of environmental factors on fiber optic performance and the ability to mitigate these effects.

General Communication Systems:

  • Intermediate knowledge of telephone systems.
  • Basic knowledge of CCTV systems.
  • Basic knowledge of public address systems (audible and visual systems, TPIS, ETEL/PTEL).
  • Intermediate knowledge of intrusion detection and access control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of seismic detection systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of radio networks (including microwave backhaul).
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of SCADA systems.
  • Basic knowledge of data networks.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge in cybersecurity, firewall, and network design.
  • Intermediate knowledge of gas monitoring systems.

General Competencies:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for meetings with prospective and existing clients.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer science

Experience

  • Three (3) years consecutive experience in Communication System design and/or maintenance, with a focus on fiber backbone installation, inspection, and testing.


PAY RATE

  • $37.87 - $51.82 per hour and is commensurate with experience.
