Hartford, United States Hartford Youth Scholars Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionHartford Youth Scholars is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works with Hartford students – beginning when they are in middle school – and helps them get “to and through” college. Our mission is to give students from Hartford the opportunity to change their lives through education. We prepare our Scholars to successfully complete a four-year college degree by offering them access to exceptional educational opportunities and providing them with ongoing, comprehensive supports. We envision these Scholars attaining college degrees and then returning to work and live in Hartford, thereby inspiring and helping to cultivate similar achievements in younger Hartford students. HYS provides Scholars and their families with academic and mentoring support for 10 years, beginning the summer before students enter 7th grade and continuing through college graduation.HYS was originally founded in 2005 to address the achievement gap in Hartford by funding scholarships for local youth to attend independent high schools. HYS soon learned that the funding of these scholarships did not meaningfully address Hartford’s opportunity gap, and the organization targeted its focus to instead provide middle school students with services helping them to develop strong study, personal, social, and other skills making them prepared for academic excellence in high school and college.Hartford Youth Scholars has four major components:• Admission: the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of qualifying Hartford schoolchildren.• Preparation: a 26-month academic component beginning the summer before a Scholar’s eighth grade year and finishing in August of the following summer.• Placement: the process through which staff serve as a liaison between Scholars’ families and independent schools to facilitate appropriate school-Scholar connections. Staff members work with Scholars and their families on all aspects of the independent school admissions and financial aid application processes.• High School & College Success: a variety of services offered to students who have commenced from the preparation and placement components of The Steppingstone Academy to ensure strong academic and social transitions, and a positive overall school experience throughout high school, and in preparation for college.POSITION DESCRIPTIONReporting to the Director of Development and Operations, the Grants Manager is a key member of a dynamic, results-oriented Development team. The Grants Manager will be responsible for researching, writing, submitting, and tracking letters of inquiry and grant applications, as well as executing all necessary reporting and funder communications. Our current grant portfolio contributes over $500,000 toward HYS's overall budget, and the Grant Manager will be responsible for both maintaining existing funder relationships and finding opportunities for significant growth.
The Grants Manager will also work closely with the Executive Director and Chief Program Officer in managing data collection and reporting deadlines. This is a full-time, hybrid position, requiring three days per week in our Hartford office on the Trinity College campus.PRINCIPAL RESPOSIBILITIES• Manage complete grants process for foundations and corporate partners, including research, collection and synthesis of data, completion of high-quality written proposals, compiling supplemental and financial information, and tracking and reporting on all grants throughout the year.• Meet all application and reporting deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, reviewing, approval, and submission.• Manage all communications with foundation contacts and grants officers to steward applications and build strong relationships.• Identify grant opportunities from new and existing foundations and corporate partners in collaboration with Development department and Executive Leadership.• Maintain all foundation and corporate accounts in HYS’ fundraising database.• Collaborate with program staff to assess organizational needs and research new funding opportunities to meet those needs.• Participate in weekly Development team meetings.• Adapt existing grant procedures to ensure efficiency and timely submission of materials.• Maintain proficient knowledge of the organization’s history and programs to effectively draft proposals, reports, and to identify alignment with funding opportunities.• Perform other duties as assigned or requested. POSITION REQUIREMENTS• BA/BS or equivalent experience plus a minimum of three years of demonstrated success in non-profit grant writing.• Excellent written and oral communicator, with strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.• Accomplished project manager with meticulous attention to detail and excellent research and analytical skills.• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, including ability to collaborate comfortably across departments and a high tolerance for shifts in priorities and needs.• Strong relationship-building capabilities, incorporating cross-cultural sensitivity.• Demonstrated passion for HYS’ mission to provide equitable educational opportunities for students in Hartford.• Proficiency with fundraising databases (Salesforce preferred).• Comfortable in a fast-paced, small team environment.
