Job Summary:

The Digital Initiatives Librarian supports the continued development, implementation and use of emerging technologies that enrich the teaching and learning landscape. This position will partner with Archivists, Reference Librarians, and Information Technology staff to identify, build, and maintain our rapidly growing digital library collections. They will support and maintain existing software solutions for library and archival open source and vendor applications including but not limited to, Islandora, CONTENTdm, ArchivesSpace, and Handle. The Digital Initiatives Librarian will play a role in researching, testing, and proposing initiatives for technology innovations for the library in support of strategic goals including managing scanning and digitization activities for the library.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage scanning and digitization platforms, workflows, hardware, and software for all formats including print, audio, and video (20%)
  • In collaboration with library and technology staff, will identify and explore new and emerging technologies (20%)
  • Improve the efficiency and integration of existing implementations such as Islandora, ArchivesSpace, and Archive-It, including performing migrations, upgrades and customizations (20%)
  • Partner with the Digital Curation Librarian to support library digital preservation initiatives, including born digital workflows (10%)
  • Assist in the development of new systems and applications, including project management (10%)
  • Support Archives Research Center staff with online access to new and legacy collections including the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr Collection to ensure timely and convenient access by students, community and scholars worldwide (10%)
  • Work with contract developers and vendors when necessary, and assist with new software implementations (5%)
  • Performs reference duties at public services desk and through online chat reference services (5%)
  • Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate degree from an ALA accredited library school with concentration in IT or digital technologies preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Experience with creation, management and usage of digital collections
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in an academic library or archives
  • Experience with digital content management systems
  • Demonstrated experience with best practices in library and archives digitization techniques for a variety of formats.

Certifications/Licenses Required: N/A

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad understanding of current and emerging trends in digitization and digital curation principles, standards, and best practices, including FADGI and Golden Thread
  • Familiarity with repository software technologies including both open source and vendor products, such as Islandora, Handle, CONTENTdm, and WordPress
  • Strong technological skills including some programming, familiarity with Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems
  • Knowledge of XML, OAI-PMH, and database design and construction
  • Experience with supporting archival management systems, such as ArchivesSpace
  • Knowledge of research data management and digital humanities an asset
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team and to foster a team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Word and Excel
