Summary

The Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing and supervising all components of the children’s services curriculum within his/her designated classroom in a manner which is reflective of KCARC’s mission to advocate and provide opportunities in a dignified and respectful manner for the total well being of individuals and families with special needs.


Essential Duties

  • Teaching, tutoring, instructing in the activity of imparting knowledge to children served.
  • Adhere to KCARC’s quality policy of striving to continuously improve delivery of all services and products to children’s services customers meeting or exceeding requirements. Establish and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. Provide for the safety, comfort, and general welfare of children by keeping all children within sight and sound at all times and ensures all staff working in classroom does the same.
  • Advance physical and intellectual competence by maintaining developmentally appropriate and language rich classroom environment, making use of space, equipment, and materials to construct learning environments that support learning, socialization, and physical development.
  • Support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance.
  • Establish positive and productive relationships with families.
  • Ensure the classroom is well run, purposeful and responsive to all children’s needs by implementing all policies, procedures and work instructions and by providing a daily written plan of activities/learning opportunities, listing targeted skills and purpose and intent.
  • Utilize current curriculum to conduct an initial and ongoing assessment of each child; complete a quarterly report on all children in classroom, establish individual goals for each child, and use assessment information to plan activities/learning opportunities.
  • For children with special needs; correlate each child’s individualized plan with related services personnel.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate all Teacher Assistants and volunteers, making expectations clear and holding all accountable.
  • Complete all required logs, prepare departmental reports, inventories, and supply list as needed and submit in timely manner.
  • Control use and care of materials, supplies, equipment, and classroom environment; notify appropriate staff of problems.
  • Maintain highest level of professionalism in all dealings with children, parents, coworkers, and public.
  • Serve on committees as directed by the Assistant Director.
  • Participate in all staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Be able to frequently lift up to 75 pounds independently and over 75 pounds with assistance.
  • All other duties as deemed necessary.
  • Additional hours if needed are mandatory

Education and/or Experience:

High School diploma or GED equivalent required

Possess a Baccalaureate degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or related field or possess an Associate of Science degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or related field or possess a CDA and working toward an A.S. degree in early childhood.

Background experience in developmentally appropriate practices in an early childhood setting.


Certifications/Licenses/Registrations:

CPR/First Aid

Ability to pass state required physical


Physical Demands:

The position requires staff to alternate from a sitting position to a standing position frequently. Repetitive motion required. Lifting, bending, twisting, and turning are required. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level is usually moderate but occasionally loud. Use of Personal Protective Equipment such as vinyl or latex gloves is occasionally required.
