About the role:

As a School Counselor at Millington Municipal Schools, you will be responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing the school's guidance program designed to increase the academic, social, emotional, and environmental strengths of our students. The position is responsible for performing both professional and administrative tasks as necessary. The position works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares instructional materials for classes assigned and provides written evidence of preparation to supervisor/administrator upon request.
  • Establishes a standard of classroom behavior and maintains classroom management in and outside of the school.
  • Implements a comprehensive guidance and counseling program based on state and District standards; collaborates with supervisor, other counselors, principal, assistant principals, faculty, staff, and community resources in the planning, coordination, and assessment of the counseling program.
  • Counsel individuals and groups of students in setting and developing strategies for the achievement of academic, social/personal development and other identified goals.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention as needed to ensure school/student safety.
  • Provides peer mediation as needed for students.
  • Works to discover and develop the special abilities of students.
  • Work to resolve students' educational handicaps.
  • Administers various tests to assess the development and needs of students.
  • Provide referrals to various school, district, and community services when appropriate.
  • Establishes and maintains confidential student case files; prepares and submits required records and reports.
  • Attend meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress.
  • Conducts conferences with parents to discuss student progress and problems; assists in presenting parent workshops as required.
  • Participate with the principal and assistant principal in the coordination of student registration, course selection, and student scheduling.
  • Conduct data analysis of attendance, detention, and failure rates as well as other factors to help determine guidance counseling needs in the assigned schools.
  • May assist in monitoring students during recess and in the cafeteria, and/or during student drop-off or dismissal.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing correspondence, copying, and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending, and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, and ordering supplies.
  • Attend training, conferences, and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Master's degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university. Requires state certification as School Counselor PreK-12 (Code 487).

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to plan curriculum and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students.
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to establish a standard of classroom behavior.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and ongoing professional development.
  • Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.

We believe in honesty and transparency throughout our hiring process, which is why our salary range for teaching positions is between $56,247.84 and $78,989.08. Your salary will be based on proven years of experience.
