POSITION SUMMARY
The primary role of the Managing Editor, Blood ICT & Blood RCI, is to oversee the day-to-day operations of Blood Immunology & Cellular Therapy and Blood Red Cells & Iron specific to submission, peer review, and post-acceptance. For each journal, the Managing Editor, Blood ICT & Blood RCI, directly supports the goals of the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor, supports various methods of communication among editors and other stakeholders, supervises editorial staff members in support of Blood ICT & Blood RCI, oversees and has knowledge of various submission and peer review procedures and trends, oversees the First Edition online prepublication process, ensures proper operation of publication integrity-related functions including plagiarism scans and image checking for papers accepted for publication in Blood ICT & Blood RCI, oversees the solicited content program for each journal, and keeps up-to-date regarding best practices in publishing and peer review.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Overall
- Oversees day-to-day editorial procedures for Blood ICT & Blood RCI and ensures timely operation of all daily staff functions for each journal.
- Coordinates bi-weekly (Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor) and monthly (All Editors) editorial office conference calls.
- Operationalizes changes of editorial procedures for Blood ICT & Blood RCI in coordination with the Director, Editorial and the other Blood Journals Managing Editors.
- Remains informed on industry trends and generates proposals for updated policies to be shared with the Director, Editorial and the editors of Blood ICT & Blood RCI.
- Monitors coverage of all Blood ICT & Blood RCI procedures when others are out of the office.
- Coordinates changes with the vendor to the manuscript submission and tracking system on behalf of the department and Editors.
- Works with the Editors to prepare agendas for regularly scheduled journal meetings.
- Coordinates messaging to large groups of Blood ICT & Blood RCI stakeholders (Editors, Authors, Reviewers).
- Peer Review
- Maintains proper operation of the journal peer review process in collaboration with Editorial Coordinators or direct action as needed.
- Ensures that Editors receive all necessary editorial correspondence.
- Oversees scheduling and progress of Blood ICT & Blood RCI solicited material programs.
- Trains new Editors on use and navigation of the online manuscript submission system and Blood Journals best practices.
- Provides Editors with technical support regarding the online manuscript submission system.
- Acts as liaison between the Editors and the editorial office regarding sabbaticals and other absences and any other matter the Editors deem appropriate.
- Acts as liaison between Authors and the Editors for matters including, but not limited to, manuscript status, needs for publication, and potential publication integrity issues.
- Coordinates support to the Editors to ensure workflow coverage during planned and unplanned staff absences.
- Serves as the primary point of contact from the journals for direct support to the Editors, Reviewers, and Authors.
- Supports the Editors in identifying, contacting, and organizing the journals’ Editorial Boards.
- Collaborates with colleagues and supervisors to develop and improve departmental policies and procedures.
- First Edition Manuscript Preparation and Publication
- Reviews manuscripts submitted to First Edition to ensure that they meet the guidelines, policies, and requirements established for the Blood Journals.
- Evaluates text similarity reports for final manuscripts to check papers for potential plagiarism.
- Ensures that manuscript images have been evaluated for possible publication integrity issues.
- Contacts authors to obtain missing materials (e.g., copyright transfer forms, figures).
- Assists authors with file uploading or submission difficulties.
- Resolves problems with publication and republishes to correct First Edition publication errors.
- Assists with preview and publication of accepted papers to Blood ICT & Blood RCI First Edition.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
- Bachelor/Master’s degree in English, science or related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written): must be able to work constructively with editors, authors, and reviewers.
- Ability to work independently and take a leading role on assigned projects.
- Proven ability to mentor, coach, supervisor, and/or positively contribute to the professional development of others.
- Experience delegating responsibilities, establishing expectations and accountabilities, and monitoring progress.
- Experience in data development, management and reporting.
- Experience in data-driven applications.
- Highly motivated and directed, with attention to detail and ability to multi-task
effectively. - Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and follow-through skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- High level of computer literacy and project management, as well as judgment and decision-making skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS
Requires ability to speak audibly and listen actively.
Requires ability to use computers, telephones and other office equipment.
May require periodic out-of-town travel.
ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society’s headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.
