The Fuller Project seeks a dynamic and innovative newsroom leader to serve as Editor in Chief (EIC). The EIC will have a proven track record of high-impact investigative journalism and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. The EIC will hone our journalistic vision, develop our growing staff of reporters and editors and shepherd partnerships with some of the world’s top publications.

The Fuller Project is the global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking reporting to catalyze positive change for women. Our long-standing focus on women, especially those facing racial or other forms of bias, leads to journalism that is relied on by decision-makers across the globe, to produce better outcomes for women and their communities. Since we launched in 2015, our reporting has influenced new legislation, helped end life-threatening practices, and led to large-scale releases of public data. For example, our investigations have led to increased funding for maternal health care, helped rescue migrant domestic workers held against their will, and held companies accountable for widespread abuse at supplier factories.

Our journalists spotlight critical issues and expose injustice with in-depth reporting published in renowned news outlets such asThe New York Times, The Washington PostandForeign Policy,and inside the largest and most respected newsrooms around the world from Afghanistan to India to Kenya. Partnering with legacy news outlets ensures our rigorous reporting reaches the broadest global audiences.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Fuller Project seeks an experienced newsroom leader to serve as Editor in Chief (EIC). The EIC will be responsible for setting and executing an editorial vision aligned with the organization’s mission and strategy, and will have full autonomy and control over journalistic decisions and priorities. They will oversee major investigative projects, inspire our journalists to do their best work, and manage partnerships with leading U.S.-based and global outlets.

The EIC will uphold the highest standards of independent, non-partisan, rigorous journalism. Reporting to the CEO and with a close working relationship with a Board Editorial Committee, the EIC will uphold and advance our mission and values; will be a creative team player; and will have or be able to quickly build expertise about issues that particularly impact women.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience leading complex projects and collaborations and will be able to oversee U.S. and global reporting and manage partnerships with other news organizations. They will have demonstrated rigorous journalistic standards; strong writing, editing, and organizational skills; excellent management and leadership experience; and a commitment to meaningfully covering underrepresented issues and groups.

Inside the newsroom, the EIC will cultivate a collaborative spirit among our committed and talented editors and reporters, drawing on a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging.

The Editor in Chief will:

Set and implement the editorial vision for the newsroom.Lead on all our editorial efforts and maximize our contribution to global, national, and local press. Prioritize stories with the greatest chance of impact, using that lens for everything from story selection to angles to publication timing and story promotion.

Supervise our hybrid newsroom of reporters in our DC-area office and in remote locations.Oversee our team of editors, ensuring ethical and rigorous journalistic standards, as well as safety and other protocols that protect our team. Attract, edit, retain, train and motivate talented reporters and freelancers. Share in organizational leadership initiatives to reinforce and build diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging.

Oversee bold, ambitious reporting projects.This includes major projects that are currently underway and future investigative, accountability and enterprise projects. Oversee some multi-media partnerships.

Pioneer innovative and high-impact partnerships.Develop high-impact, collaborative reporting and publishing partnerships with influential newsrooms. Build and deepen meaningful relationships with our contributors around the U.S. and the world, and with existing international newsroom partners.

Engage effectively internally and externally.Work closely with our fundraising and communications team. Collaborate effectively across the organization and help build and support systems to further the goals of the organization. Serve as a face of the organization in external communications, for instance in occasional speaking engagements and by representing the newsroom to funders.

QUALIFICATIONS

We seek the following qualifications:

  • Passion for and commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project.
  • A collaboration mindset with regards to newsroom partnerships and centering the contributions of local reporters.
  • A proven track record of overseeing major investigations that make an impact.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience editing and managing reporters, including successfully recruiting, mentoring and retaining staff.
  • Some experience in legacy news, or working with legacy news outlets, is preferred. Some nonprofit news experience is strongly desired.
  • Experience leading multimedia projects, and an interest to expand reporting projects to multimedia formats through collaboration, is a plus.
  • Track record of supporting and contributing to a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.
