Definition and Examples of Work

  • Installs, removes, diagnoses common problems, repairs, adjusts and monitors the performance of and conformance to specifications of equipment used for communication purposes, including mobile radio units, fiber optic communications equipment, telephone equipment, test equipment, batteries and battery chargers, tower light control units, digital PABX and cellular telephone equipment and tape and solid state voice recorders.
  • Troubleshoots siren/light control boxes, antennas and coax, CB radios in KTA-issued vehicles.
  • Uses technical manuals and complex test equipment under established guidelines to perform routine work.
  • Installs, splices, and terminates fiber optic network infrastructure.
  • Tracks and monitor OSP cable locates.
  • Monitors construction projects that are on or near the KTA right-of-way to protect OSP fiber under direction of supervisor.
  • Programs, troubleshoots, and repairs the KTA secured two-way radios.
  • Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Organizes and updates grounding and cabling systems for all communications rooms and POP building.
  • Provides vendor access and escort in KTA communication rooms and POPs.
  • Installs, monitors and modifies optical fiber, analog and VoIP telephone equipment, grounding and bounding system, two-way radio system, computer and network cabling, PA system, location services.
  • Inventories and orders equipment and parts.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

This position works daily to obtain information, provide input, and problem solve as part of a team, while researching and using technical and industry knowledge to complete tasks. Most work tasks are self-determined. Participates in short and long-term planning. Requires contact, diplomacy, and negotiation with internal customers and external vendors. Decision making is done independently when decisions do not impact other departments. Purchase requests require supervisory approval. QUALIFICATION

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of mobile and base station radio units, fiber optic communications equipment, telephone equipment including digital PABX and cellular telephone equipment, batteries and battery charges, tower light control units, tape and solid state voice recorders.
  • Ability to install, remove, diagnose, repair, replace, and maintain electronic and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, maps, charts, plans and schematics.
  • Knowledge of proper techniques for installing, splicing, troubleshooting and testing of both single and multimode fiber optics networks.
  • Knowledge of OSP/ISP fiber industry standards.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment including computers, peripherals and phones.
  • Ability to use two-way radios, OTDR, radio network service monitor, antenna network analyzer, IT network analyzer, locators, telephone network tester, visual and tone cable identification sets, GPS locations systems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, including fusion Splicer, multimeter, soldering iron.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date records for all appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through oral/written instructions.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulatory agencies and their rules and regulations as the pertain to the job.

  • Two years of experience in maintenance and repair of fiber optic network and electro- mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Visio.
  • Experience with various software applications including networking, Motorola CPS, Google Earth, Adobe, Secure CRT.
  • Radio P25 system experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with microwave system, IMC consoles and equipment, tower, lights and inspection.
  • Fiber optic color code.
  • Experience in troubleshooting the network and radio system.

Certification, License, Registration

  • Fiber optics certification.
  • Kansas driver license with good driving record.
