The Harbor Bank of Maryland's Career Fellows Program is designed to engage, equip, invest in & prepare post graduate business students for professional success in the banking industry. We are seeking graduates from local universities who have demonstrated a record of remarkable professional achievement early on in their careers/education for a two-year rotational program.
Program Learning:
Fellows’ participants will complete a two-year rotation in various departments of The Harbor Bank of Maryland (and its affiliates), gaining an understanding of the Bank’s mission and work, while
building a strong credit foundation, enhancing skills in analytical thinking, and developing
technical underwriting skills through our CATR (Credit Analyst Training Program)
Job Description and Program Overview
This cohort of The Harbor Bank of Maryland (HBM or, the “Bank”) Career Fellows
Program will focus on credit analyst training. The Credit Analyst training program is a two-year
training curriculum designed to: jumpstart a challenging career as a credit professional;
provide participants exposure to the commercial and commercial real estate lending
arena; and develop future leaders within the banking industry. The CATP is a blended
learning plan, with on-the-job training and a formal curriculum related to commercial
lending and credit analysis, as well as individual book studies on the impact made on
banking industry by historical bankers; and the economic and social outcomes resulting
from city planning and development.
Participants will be required to successfully complete a minimum of two web-based
instructor lead and/or self-paced certified credit analyst schools, which will be the
foundation of the program and the starting block of a successful career.
As an analyst, you will focus on analyzing borrower financial performance,
operations/industry dynamics, monitoring client credit conditions and evaluating requests
for new loans and existing relationships. Your key tasks and responsibilities may include
but are not limited to:
• Spreading financial statements and preparing the complete analysis of the borrower
(and any related parties) for new and existing relationships utilizing the various
underwriting methods.
• Managing a loan portfolio for compliance with loan covenants and confirming the
accuracy of risk ratings or recommending changes as warranted.
• Analyzing collateral, and financial trends of clients in various industries to identify key
strengths and credit risks associated with new and existing credit requests.
• Preparing loan approval packages, in partnership with loan officers and portfolio
managers to determine the appropriate loan structure and banking solutions to meet
customer needs and for credit decisioning.
• Reviewing field examinations and appraisals for collateral performance and valuation
trends.
• Analyzing clients' financial performance by comparing it to past performance,
projections, and industry standards.
• Attending client meetings to develop a deeper understanding of the client's business,
management team, and past and future performance.
• Completing compliance-related tasks as requested by the portfolio management/
underwriting team.
In addition to the training outlined above, participants will have exposure to the Bank’s
top executives and access to our senior leadership team for mentoring and on-the-job
training opportunities. Participants will proactively engage with loan officers, credit team
members and other Bank affiliates to gain in-depth knowledge of various commercial
lending products and services and fully understand the credit process.

Selection as a Harbor Bank of Maryland Fellow is based on a combination of the following criteria:
- A record of remarkable professional achievement early in one’s career and/or educations
- Evidence of leadership skills and the potential for further growth
- A demonstrated commitment to learning
- The skills to succeed at the highest levels of the banking industry, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to commit to 2-years in the program
- 3.0 GPA with a degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting or other related field
