ICFJ is looking to add to its global staff by hiring a Program Director to work for the Programs Department.

The Program Director works in the design and implementation of ICFJ programs worldwide. The program director assists other staff members with programs or projects as needed; and acts as a full and active member of the program team to ensure that ICFJ maintains the highest standard of quality and efficiency in all its projects. The director works closely with senior management in identifying key objectives for ICFJ programs and managing individual programs

Responsibilities:

  • Takes responsibility for all aspects of program implementation
    • Develops project management plan for assigned programs
    • Oversees implementation of program activities
    • Oversees program budgets (monthly)
    • Manages staff/staff time
    • Writes and/or edits monthly, quarterly, progress and/or final reports for funders
    • Responsible for grant compliance
    • Responsible for funder relations
    • Creates and supervises activities timeline(s)
    • Develops and implements monitoring and evaluation plan (s) (MEL)
    • Develops/oversees implementation of program communications
  • Works with VP Programs to improve program processes and management
    • Helps to identify new processes to improve workflow
    • Implements new processes that improve workflow
  • Works with Human Resources to recruit and onboard new program staff
    • Helps develop onboarding processes for programs
  • Works with VP Programs to assign staff to new programs and train new staff
    • Trains staff on program requirements (as detailed above: budget management, implementation of program activities, program communications, MEL strategies)
  • Works with Development on design of new programs for proposals
    • Reviews proposals: activities, timelines
    • Reviews budgets
      • Represents ICFJ at conferences, meetings and other events that involve participants, partners, board members and funders
      • Occasional program travel as appropriate

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of five years relevant work experience in non-profit grant management, including federal grants, and/or relevant journalism role
  • At least two years coordinating non-profit program activities, generating reports, overseeing budget expenditures
  • Demonstrated experience with databases and new digital technology
  • Demonstrated analytic, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated written communication skills; strong English-language skills
  • Proficiency in a second language besides English is strongly preferred, especially French, Arabic, Urdu, Tamil, Hindi, or another South Asian language
  • Demonstrated experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa, MENA, or South Asia strongly preferred
  • Valid US work authorization is required

Key Competencies:

  • Professional Knowledge: Knowledge of federal-grant regulations; understanding of best journalistic practices; understanding of program implementation including logistics, timelines, budgets, monitoring and evaluation, deliverables and impact
  • Geographic Knowledge: Understanding of international political, economic and cultural/social environments in which journalists, newsrooms and media entrepreneurs/innovators operate
  • Management: Ability to establish expectations and give clear directions to meet goals and objectives; ability to motivate and engage employees through effective communication; ability to assign, assess, and review work; ability to coach, mentor and recommend training for staff; ability to evaluate performance
  • Self-Management: Ability to manage workload and adjust to change by prioritizing and/or using new resources to accomplish program goals; ability to complete assignments in a timely manner; ability to work under an appropriate level of supervision; ability to demonstrate professional behavior
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to analyze and problem-solve
  • Commitment to Excellence: Ability to consistently achieve or surpass program deliverables through attention to detail, accuracy and focus on program impact
  • Communications: Ability to communicate program progress and needs effectively to ICFJ supervisors and support staff, and to funders; ability to communicate program impact effectively online and via social media to ICFJ’s global audiences
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding and ability to use databases including Salesforce and Google Sheets/Docs; understanding of and ability to use and adopt new digital tools such as Slack, Airtable, Asana; ability to show ICFJ staff how to use new resources

  • Journalism experience preferred
