FLSA Classification: Hourly

Responsibilities:
  • Run scale during operational hours, including exchange of required verification, documents, and commodity tickets for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal material sales from industrial accounts and peddlers.
  • Ensure all transactions are properly documented and recorded in the SMS Mayer electronic inventory data system.
  • Greet and assist customers seeking to sell ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal materials.
  • Ensure all customers have validated identification and supply all required documentation as needed for the applicable transaction.
  • Comply with all intake and inspection best practices and protocols, including with respect to non-acceptance of vehicles, prohibited items and SMS’s CFC program.
  • Effectively communicate with all vendors, suppliers, customers, employees etc. while working with predominately Hispanic customers to ensure compliance with document requirements and safe movements within working scrap yard (fluency in Spanish required). 
  • Lead by example and adhere to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment.  Always have proper PPE.
  • Prepare daily reports and provide information to management as needed, including ensuring all sales documentation to be completed by SMS employees and customers are completed and submitted appropriately.
  • Work as part of the Blue Island team to help operations meet KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) to meet or exceed efficiency and performance standards.
  • Maintain strict compliance with SMS policies, and all applicable local, state and federal regulations.
  • Comply with cost savings initiatives, identify and recognize ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue, including treating any company expenses the same as you would if it was your own money.
  • Function as part of a team and align with core values to meet company policies and goals, escalating and reporting issues that require further assistance as appropriate.
  • Plan, participate and actively contribute to internal and external business meetings as needed.
  • Execute work while under direct or indirect supervision of the General Manager.
  • Treat employees, customers, suppliers, etc. professionally, respectfully, and courteously.
  • Must pass a drug screen; $19/hour pay.

Physical Demands
Ability to walk more than 1000 yards; stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift and carry no more than 50 lbs.; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting; kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing; problem solving, discretion and independent judgment; regular and dependable attendance.

Working Conditions
Requires physical exertion with exposure to natural elements -- working in a scrap metal production and processing operation.

Hazards
May work in environments that extreme in nature like environmental conditions such as heat, cold, heights, hazardous chemicals, loud noises, dangerous equipment, long hours etc.
