Summary

Under the direction of the Early Childhood Education Director and Lead Teachers, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting in daily aspects of the classroom program and care of children. The Assistant Teacher works toward providing a program to foster children’s social, physical, emotional, and cognitive growth at all times under the direction of the Lead Teachers and Director.

Duties

  • Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Attend to children's basic needs by feeding them, dressing them, and changing their diapers.
  • Teach basic skills, such as color, shape, number and letter recognition, personal hygiene, and social skills.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Read books to entire classes or to small groups.
  • Organize and lead activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and field trips.
  • Observe and evaluate children's performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Identify children showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health-related problems and discuss them with supervisors, parents or guardians, and child development specialists.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggest ways that they can promote learning and development.
  • Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Teach proper eating habits and personal hygiene.
  • Serve meals and snacks in accordance with nutritional guidelines.
  • Assimilate arriving children to the school environment by greeting them, helping them remove outerwear, and selecting activities of interest to them.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to children.
  • Demonstrate activities to children.
  • Arrange indoor and outdoor space to facilitate creative play, motor-skill activities, and safety.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Organize and label materials and display students' work in a manner appropriate for their ages and perceptual skills.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist Lead teacher and directors in providing a quality program that takes into consideration the needs of each child and the goals and objectives of the Learning Station, as well as local, state, federal regulations, and Connecticut Preschool Assessment Framework/Creative Curriculum.
  • Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the children at all times.
  • Create and maintain a safe and healthy setting that fosters children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respects their dignity and their contributions.
  • Under the direction of lead teacher: Follow and implement established program practices based upon current knowledge in the field of child development and related disciplines and upon particular knowledge of each child.
  • Prepare daily snack tray and assist children during clean up time.
  • Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleague).
  • Assist children in sink and bathroom area. On a changing table, attend to essential changing needs of children that require diapers or pull-ups per CT state regulations.
  • Ensure that children’s belongings are removed from cubby and packed into backpack prior to daily dismissal.
  • Attending monthly staff meeting. Work with teacher to prepare activities and projects to be discussed at meeting.
  • Fulfill requirements by the State of Connecticut to attend continuing education classes including but not limited to professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops and seminars to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Keep accurate work-related professional development, first aid, CPR, medical and EpiPen documentation valid and up to date.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary and appropriate as instructed by Early Childhood Education Director, Assistant ECE Director, and Lead Teachers.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of eighteen (18) years old.
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalency certificate or at least five hundred and forty (540) hours documented experience in working with unrelated children of the same age(s) to be served in this program.
  • Minimum year experience working in classroom setting.
  • Must submit to and pass fingerprint screening.
  • Documentation of a physical examination and a negative TINE test, valid within one year of employment is mandatory.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to properly instruct children and maintain a cohesive learning environment.
  • The individual must have the ability to work well with children in cooperation with other staff and parents of participants.
  • Must be able to visually observe children during active and passive pursuits in order to document behaviors and activities in accordance with state regulations and school policies.
  • Must be willing and able to read aloud age-appropriate books and text to classroom children.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn basic recordkeeping via iPad and technology programs.
  • Ability to establish priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as a team with Director and co-workers.
  • Must be responsive and flexible to the needs of the program.
