About This Position
We are seeking an experienced educator and leader who is enthusiastic about working with youth, mentoring a team of staff, developing nature-based education programs, and fostering an inclusive and justice-centered community. During the school year, this position coordinates and supports teen and youth programs across all three Metro West sites, including Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary in Natick, Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln, and Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont. They also assist with planning and overseeing weekend programming and vacation week programming for ages 4-15. In the summer, this position works alongside the Camp Director to directly oversee Drumlin Farm Camp and Broadmoor Nature Camp programs.

The ideal candidate works well in a collaborative environment and is committed to creating spaces of belonging for campers, caregivers, and staff.

Responsibilities
Year-Round

  • Assist with camp program and curriculum development, marketing, and registration in conjunction with the camp director, registrar, and other departments
  • Work with the camp director to recruit and hire a team of approximately 90 staff across Broadmoor and Drumlin Farm camps during the summer
  • Act as a mentor and advisor to the Metro West Youth Climate Leadership Program (YCLP)
  • Recruit teens age 12-17 from local communities to join YCLP
  • Help youth leaders to plan and facilitate regular meetings, and at least one large community event each year
  • Foster a youth-led environment by helping young leaders build confidence as a team with minimal input from adults
  • Coordinate and support teen and youth year-round programs across all three Metro West sites, especially at Broadmoor and Drumlin Farm
  • Support staff recruitment and training, monthly supervision, and evaluation of staff running weekend programs; communicate with specialist staff
  • Assist with marketing and communication with families before and during programs, and evaluation during and after programs

Summer Months

  • Play a lead role in the planning and execution of two weeks of staff training, including developing a sense of community, supporting program development, and delivering training on areas such as educational techniques, safety and emergency procedures, teamwork and more, for seasonal camp employees
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training on safety, nature and farm-based activities
  • Assist in regular communication with camp families and caregivers, including responding to concerns and mediating conflicts
  • Oversee counselors as they develop and deliver nature and farm related programs
  • Provide support, energy, motivation, and a fun and inclusive community for the camp staff
  • Ensure lesson plans are prepared and implemented that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers; evaluate success of programs and camper development
  • Monitor and evaluate program delivery abilities of camp staff; provide feedback, program ideas, and guidance to counselors
  • Provide recommendations and concerns to Camp Director regarding counselor performance
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs
  • Provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all camp group program areas including oversight of daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
  • Ensure that program areas are kept clean and free of hazards and debris

  • Experience with working with children or youth at a camp or in a similar environment, preferably on an administrative level
  • Experience in the development and delivery of educational programs and activities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a desire to work collaboratively on a team
  • Strong organizational and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to incorporating principals of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice into all areas of work, and a commitment to continued personal learning in these areas
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR, or willingness to obtain
  • Must be comfortable working with and around animals
  • Ability to supervise and work with multiple persons at a time, of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in most weather conditions
  • Ability to physically access sanctuary terrain by foot.

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $22.90-$25.67/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Mass Audubon employees also enjoy 13 paid holidays (holidays may shift annually due to where days fall within calendar).

Work Schedule
Full time schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. From September-May, weekend hours occur at least once a month and/or some evening hours will be required. This position has the option to work a hybrid schedule during the school year, with a mix of in-person (at least 2-3 days weekly) and remote work. During the summer, this position must be on-site five weekdays a week, and can expect to work 9-10 hours per day. Vacation time may be unlikely during the months of May through August due to the summer schedule.

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
