JOB TITLE: Diagnostics Lab Technician CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Diagnostics DATE REVISED: 01/08/24

SUMMARY

A laboratory technician will provide technical support in the diagnostic labs including but not limited to: sample processing, nucleic acid extractions and molecular assays, serological assays, basic veterinary microbiology, and other laboratory tasks as assigned. They will also interact with research team members, and other departments as needed.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Reports to: Molecular Lab Supervisor

Supervises: Has no supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist and lead in daily functions of the laboratory, conduct assays, data interpretation & reporting
  • Receive, process and file diagnostic submission forms and results
  • Work with various animal tissues and pathogens in a Biosafety level 2 environment
  • Conduct assigned projects, experiments, or departmental activities to meet diagnostic goals and timelines according to company SOPs
  • Maintain laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment in order to meet project requirements
  • Interact with lab personnel, as well as other departments within the company
  • Must be able to conduct assignments with limited supervision
  • Work in a safe and productive manner with the guidelines established by policy and follow good laboratory practices
  • Accountable for complying with the company handbook and all policies set by the company and delegated authority
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • The position prefers a four-year degree in Microbiology or related life sciences field with relative experience in animal health.
  • Preference given to applicants with prior laboratory experience.
  • The position requires good verbal and written skills, and good manufacturing, laboratory, and clinical practices.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate basic laboratory mathematical calculations such as stock dilutions.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILL & ABILITIES

Attention to detail. Communication skills - verbal and written. Data collection, management and analysis. Problem analysis and problem solving. Planning and Organizing. Judgement. Decision-making. Customer service orientation. Teamwork.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25-40 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 60 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will work in a laboratory, research farm, and office setting where they conduct experiments and analyze the results. Technicians and scientists who work with biosafety level 2 organisms must follow appropriate safety procedures.
