CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time, Non-Exempt


POSITION PURPOSE:

This Integrated Education and Training Instructor is responsible for providing skill building and GED instruction to members in the YouthBuild program and re-entry program members. The Integrated Education and Training Instructor will work closely with the STEM Tech Instructor to help with certification training and hands on projects.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions and basic tasks. Under limited to no supervision from the Education and Training Manager, the Integrated Education and Training Instructor will perform the following functions:

  1. Instructional Strategies:
    1. Develop and implement lesson plans for developmental curriculum for members in pre-GED, GED, and college transition; show written evidence of preparation as required;
    2. Present the subject matter in a variety of formats that members at varying academic levels can complete; including full class, small group, and individual instruction; 
    3. Present lessons that include full-class, small-group, and individual instruction; project-based assignments and assignments that integrate with service activities;
    4. Help teach digital literacy skills needed for success in completing the GED and Post-Secondary Education and Training, including basic keyboarding, Google Workspace, email and appropriate use of social media;
    5. Use innovative, contemporary teaching methods based on best practices to assist participant learning; Accommodate individual participant’s needs through appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment;
    6. Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to utilize service-learning activities to reinforce the educational curriculum and other YouthBuild Program elements, such as job skills, civic engagement and leadership development; 
    7. Support participant achievement on the GED test by utilizing online practice tests and coordinating volunteer tutors;
    8. Work Closely with STEM Tech instructor to assist in certification obtainment for Digital Literacy and Manufacturing.
    9. Work with the STEM Tech Instructor to Develop curriculum or lesson plans, course content and course materials that relate to certifications, hands-on skills-building activities and project-based and service-learning activities
    10. Work closely with the Post Secondary Education and Training Coordinator to assist members with their transition to PSE or vocational certification.
  2. Participant Growth and Development:
    1. Assist members in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study;
    2. Consistently assess participant achievement by various tests, including CASAS and online pre-tests for the GED;
    3. Assist members in preparing a professional portfolio and utilizing social media, and other online tools become competitive members of the workforce;
    4. Present a positive role model for members that support the mission of the school;
    5. Implement and adhere to campus attendance procedures and maintain accurate attendance records;
    6. Assist members with completing assignments related to workforce preparedness, successful scholarship applications, and personal time and financial management.
    7. Learn about and implement Restorative Justice Principles to handle participant challenges
  3. Classroom Management and Organization:
    1. Create a classroom environment that is welcoming and conducive to learning;
    2. Administer discipline according to YouthBuild Program policies;
    3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect members, equipment, materials, and facilities;
    4. Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materials;
    5. Utilize technology to provide a range of learning experiences.
  4. Communication:
    1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with members and their parents; which may include home visits;
    2. Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, members, parents, and community members;
    3. Use appropriate communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  5. Professional Growth and Development:
    1. Demonstrate current knowledge and skill in teaching strategies and the learning process;
    2. Participate in staff development programs;
    3. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvements;
    4. Behave professionally, ethically, and responsibly;
    5. Be willing to learn;
    6. Be adaptive to change.
  6. Policy Implementation:
    1. Keep informed of and comply with state and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers and charter schools;
    2. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required including assisting with and maintaining Special Education folders.
  7. General:
    1. Perform data entry and grant tasks as it relates to GED;
    2. Professional development as assigned by YouthBuild Director or Executive Management;
    3. Perform other related duties as required or assigned by the supervisor.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Required

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION: Bachelor’s degree in Education

EXPERIENCE: Two years of previous related experience working with academically and socially at-risk opportunity youth and young adults with criminal records and a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, cultural and spiritual practices. Related experience in jobs training, youth development, working with contracts, reporting measurements, audit request, compliance, member coordination and, or working as a YouthBuild/AmeriCorps model

Equivalent

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in the specified or related field of study and four years of the, OR Associate’s degree in the specified or related field of study six years of work experience such as described in the essential functions and duties of the job description.

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION: Valid Texas Teacher’s Certification, Bilingual


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE: Computer applications, such as Word; Excel; Access; Google Docs and Sheets. Structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar; Education and Training, Principles and methods for curriculum development, training and design; GED; Compass and TSI testing procedures and preparation for online and paper tests; teaching instruction for individuals and groups

WORKING MODEL AND CONDITIONS:

TRAVEL: Service Sites and occasionally attend professional conferences, workshops, training, home visits, court, chaperone day and or overnight field trips, and annual staff retreats.
