Program Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Supervisory Responsibility: Art Instructors
Position SummaryImplement the developmental program for adults with developmental disabilities. Supervise program staff and the day-to-day operations of the programs involved. Perform supervisory duties which involve working on multiple assignments with short term deadlines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with clients on art projects of their choosing and related to their achieving IPP goals. Circulate the studio and be available to work with clients. Be available to go on outings with clients when needed. Be available to oversee collaborative studio projects with outside agencies.
- Maintain program standards as required by regulatory agencies (including ECF, Department of Developmental Services, etc.) for the operation of the program (program services, staffing, safety, and physical plant specifications). Prepare reports and maintain records required by state and federal agencies.
- In consultation with the Art Director, work with staff and provide direction and support in developing, implementing, and evaluating instructional strategies. Organize art projects and curriculum and oversee the productivity of projects created by the Art Instructors, including developing new art methods, providing access to proper art supplies, and ensuring client safety. Introduce artists to new art techniques while expanding one’s own knowledge of art materials and techniques from two dimensional to three-dimensional works. Oversee Art Instructor trainings and critiques. Teach and encourage artist independence, collaboration, and care of materials. Ensure art equipment and studio are properly used and maintained.
- In consultation with the Art Director, create annual draft budget proposal and review projects for each fiscal year, review program budget and expenditures, and maintain approved program budgets. Complete monthly billing and management reports and ensure all paperwork is submitted to the regional center. Ensure attendance books are complete and accurate for billing purposes.
- Recruit, select, and supervise staff. Review resumes and conduct interviews. Provide facility orientation and training (policies, procedures, etc.) for new hires, volunteers, and interns. Evaluate staff annually and provide to the Director for review. Handle employee relations issues; provide leadership in conflict resolution by facilitating discussions and taking appropriate course of action. Organize and lead staff meetings, trainings, in-service, etc., and provide minutes to the Director monthly. Review timesheets for accuracy and submit to Payroll.
- Maintain maximum client enrollment. Review client referrals and consult with the Case Manager to finalize enrollment decisions. Participate in case conferences and provide input for identifying artistic, educational, psychological, and social objectives and behavior support for artists and implement same. Document case notes monthly.
- Ensure staff and consumer safety by adhering to and overseeing compliance with ECF Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Comply with and supervise clients’ seizure prevention and management plans. Follow ECF guidelines for reporting medical emergencies, suspected abuse or neglect and unusual incidents to the appropriate staff member or authorities. Assist with medical emergencies including giving first aid and CPR and transporting staff or consumers to a medical facility or home. Participate in safety meetings, organize safety drills, and prepare reports.
- Supervise the maintenance of the building, equipment, and inventory. Ensure building is open daily and on time during regular program hours. Ensure the designated display space in the studio, maintain a clean presentable and curated selection of exhibited art.
- Act as public relations/community outreach spokesperson. Disseminate information and develop cooperative relationships. Facilitate communication between the artist and public so the work can be presented and discussed by the artist. Assist with organizing and curating art shows and events. Staff and supervise exhibitions. Organize and facilitate critiques on artists’ artwork.
- Assist the Case Manager with resolving conflicts and behavior issues with clients. Analyze situation and recommend a course of action. Employ NCI techniques if needed.
- Ensure artists have proper supervision at all times while at the Art Center including during arrival, breaks, departure, and outings. When needed, assist program participants with personal hygiene including toileting and occurrences of illness and incontinence.
- Comply with ECF’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Ensure safe use and operation of tools and/or equipment.
- Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements.
- Observe regular, on-site work hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Licenses/Certifications: bachelor’s degree in fine art required.
Experience: Two years’ professional experience working with adults with special needs, preferably adults with developmental disabilities, and one year of supervisory experience.
Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Math skills sufficient to perform simple calculations.
- Well organized with the ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Pass a DOJ background investigation.
- Provide evidence of negative TB test.
- CPR, First Aid, and NCI certification (may be obtained during the first month of employment).
- Own transportation, proof of auto insurance, valid California Driver’s License, and insurable driving record.
Requirements
- Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, evidence of car insurance, and insurable driving record.
- Pass a DOJ background investigation.
- Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
- Regular, on-site work hours.

- Ability to push consumers in wheelchairs and assist non-ambulatory consumers with transferring to and from wheelchairs.
- Occasionally required to travel to various sites within Los Angeles County.
- Ability to implement NCI, First Aid, and CPR.
