Description of the Underwriting Function:

Life and Long Term Care (LTC) Underwriting is responsible for evaluating insurance applicants by correlating all aspects of risk to determine whether to accept, modify, or decline applications.

  • Life underwriting focuses on financial qualifications and mortality by evaluating risk of death, which includes history, degree of medical maintenance, treatment, and flags of potential future risk.
  • Long Term Care (LTC) underwriting focuses on morbidity by evaluating the risk of disease to include onset, duration, stability, control, and again flags of future concerns.

Underwriters are a critical component to the placement of coverage and can directly impact our position in the marketplace.

Client's Underwriting Focus:


Client's Underwriting Department is committed to growing the business and providing applicants with superb customer service by utilizing traditional underwriting expertise and upfront data/tools to conduct smart interviews. Our goal is to secure all relevant underwriting information faster, with fewer routine requirements, thereby reducing cost and improving the customer experience, all while maintaining industry leading mortality/morbidity results.



This job description will focus on the Technical Consultants primary responsibilities:

Driving strategy by:

  • Delivering on personal recommendations or supporting company initiatives by identifying project needs to include establishing guidelines, plans of actions, and processes that allow for underwriting success.
  • Partnering with other consultants and departments (such as Project Management and IT) for the most effective divide and conquer plan, which could include a hand in:
  • Data collections and subsequent analysis
  • Piloting and testing
  • Creating and delivering new processes and/or guidelines, and more.
  • Constantly touching base with the Management and Consultant teams to ensure we are aligned with the top priorities.
  • Serving as department liaison and subject matter expert for entire company to and from needs.


Protecting risk by:

  • Identifying guideline or process changes, system solutions, and/or training needs from project work.
  • Ensuring proper analysis and adherence to governance has taken place prior to the delivery of guidelines and philosophies.
  • Coordinating external and internal audits and implementing any correlating needs.


Staying Consumer/Customer focused by:

  • Balance protecting risk, while enabling underwriters to process with ease, keeping a constant eye on innovation and improving the consumer experience.


Supporting production by:

  • Identifying efficient processes.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors or Associates degree in related field

Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience with extensive knowledge of UW website, manuals, reinsurance, underwriting philosophy, and underwriting systems

Ability to analyze metrics and translate into action plans

Demonstrated strong presentation and collaborating skills that influence and motivate others

Organized with ability to prioritize

Excellent communications with the ability to translate complex issues in a positive, clear and concise manner that facilitates all audiences
