Position Summary:

Responsible for testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning accelerator modules and associated equipment, with a specific emphasis on electrical components and supporting RF systems

at Mevion's production facility in Littleton, MA. Responsibilities include:

Essential Functions:

  1. Conduct testing procedures on significant RF systems, encompassing 20KW solid-state power amplifiers, RF resonators, transmission lines, and related components.
  2. Perform RF tuning activities to achieve resonance across a wide band frequency range (94-127MHz) and ensure impedance matching with appropriate electrical length for each accelerator module.
  3. Utilize fundamental instrumentation such as Oscilloscopes, VNAs, Hi-Pot kits, Geiger radiation detectors, ionization chambers, electrometers, among others, for testing and diagnostics.
  4. Test and maintain major power sources, including the 2000A superconducting Magnet Power System, 1500V RF bias power supply, and Ion Source Pulser.
  5. Troubleshoot critical electrical components such as UPS, VFDs, MCS switches, PDMs, diode stacks, current transducers, and transformers.
  6. Test, maintain, and operate key control systems like PLCs, RF control modules, Quench Detecting Signal Processors, Turbo controllers, Cryocooler controllers, and proton control modules.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in assembling and testing RF resonators, rotating capacitors, Dee boxes, central regions, and other essential RF components in a controlled ISO class 7 cleanroom environment.
  8. Safely handle, replace, and store compressed gas cylinders and Cryogenic liquid Dewars containing Nitrogen, Helium, etc.
  9. Perform maintenance and testing of high vacuum systems (approximately 5e-8 torr) utilizing turbo pumps and leak detectors.
  10. Adhere to safety protocols in radiation environments, wearing dosimeters and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in compliance with safety regulations.
  11. Participate actively in beam testing and commissioning of the proton therapy system S250i (PTS-250), ensuring compliance with proton beam dose/charge, Bragg peak energy, and spot size requirements at the ISO center.
  12. Maintain meticulous documentation practices, including daily work logs, data analysis using Excel and office software, and responsibility for redlining and updating manufacturing documentation throughout the testing process.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  1. An Associate’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  2. 2 years of experience as an Electrical Technician, specifically working with Cyclotron Particle Accelerators.
  3. 2 years of experience (which can have been gained concurrently with the primary experience requirement) working with the following:
    • Assembling, installing, and testing RF systems in either controlled cleanroom or compact radioactive spaces;
    • RF tuning with solid-state amplifiers and key system components;
    • Performing duties effectively in high radiation environments.
    • Testing high-current and standard high-voltage power supplies, along with typical electrical control systems like PLCs and other subsystem controllers;
    • Maintaining and operating vacuum systems, including using turbo pumps and leak detectors.
