Position Overview

Our client is seeking an exceptional Principal Digital Systems Engineer and Architect to spearhead the development and architecture of advanced digital Systems on Chip. This role requires deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and extensive industry knowledge. The ideal candidate will have a profound understanding of digital systems, FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) architectures, firmware engineering, and signal processing. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and troubleshooting sophisticated digital systems. The successful candidate will drive innovation, provide technical guidance, and ensure the seamless integration of complex digital solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate mastery in digital design, signal processing, FPGA architectures, and firmware engineering, integrating both theoretical knowledge and practical experience to drive innovation.
  • Rapidly diagnose and resolve intricate technical challenges with minimal resources, ensuring high reliability and performance of systems.
  • Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and verification of complex digital designs, ensuring alignment with system-level requirements and performance objectives.
  • Maintain a holistic view of the entire digital system, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency from the application level to physical implementation.
  • Design, develop and optimize high-performance programmable logic designs, effectively partitioning tasks between hardware (FPGA fabric) and software (embedded processors) to achieve optimal performance.
  • Provide exceptional technical leadership, guiding design decisions and mentoring engineers in best practices for digital systems development.
  • Drive innovation by exploring new technologies, methodologies, and tools, particularly those that enhance low-level firmware performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct expert trade-off analyses, balancing competing design requirements such as performance, cost, power consumption, and area to achieve optimal design goals.
  • Utilize expertise in VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog and embedded software development (C/C++) to drive complete digital platforms based on programmable System on Chip (SoC) devices.
  • Lead the development of high-quality, low-level firmware, including device drivers, HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layers) and real-time control algorithms, and ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices.
  • Design, implement, and optimize firmware for USB, PCIe, and GbE interfaces across both embedded platforms (including PetaLinux-based systems) and host computers (Windows and Linux). Ensure real-time performance, low-latency communication, compatibility, and seamless operation with various hardware and software components.
  • Optimize firmware performance for high-speed data transfer and low-latency communication over various communication interfaces. Identify and resolve bottlenecks.
  • Apply a strong background in digital signal processing (DSP), high-speed data acquisition, real-time processing, and control systems to enhance system capabilities.
  • Design digital systems that not only meet current needs but are also adaptable to future challenges and evolving technologies.
  • Address complex digital design and system-level issues with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, providing innovative solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, minimizing risks through a deep understanding of regulatory requirements.
  • Draw on extensive experience to make informed decisions, avoid common pitfalls, and deliver effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, and systems engineering, to integrate digital designs into larger system architectures, ensuring seamless interaction between components and high system reliability.
  • Oversee comprehensive verification and validation efforts, including simulation, emulation, and hardware testing, to ensure robust and reliable system performance.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, leveraging state-of-the-art knowledge to anticipate future developments and their impacts on digital designs.
  • Cultivate strategic vendor relationships to access cutting-edge technologies and maintain reliable supply chains.
  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation, test plans, and user manuals.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in FPGA design, implementation, using VHDL/Verilog and HLS tools.
  • 5+ years of experience in firmware engineering with a strong track record of expertise and hands-on proficiency.
  • Proven experience in signal processing, including design, simulation, and implementation on FPGA devices.
  • Strong background in high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Ethernet, and USB.
  • Extensive experience in simulation, synthesis, timing closure in large FPGAs, and placement software tools.
  • Experienced with RF circuit design and integration, including working with ADCs, DACs, and RF components.
  • In-depth knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and hardware interfaces. Extensive experience with low-level programming and hardware control.
  • Extensive experience with C and C++ for low-level firmware development, and strong skills in Python for scripting and automation tasks.
  • Experience in developing and optimizing device drivers, interrupt service routines (ISR), and hardware abstraction layers (HAL).
  • Experience in developing and executing FPGA and firmware test plans, understanding DFT (Design For Test) capabilities, and using testing methodologies.
  • Experienced in using digital oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, BERTs (Bit Error Rate Testers), and other advanced measurement tools for laboratory debugging.
  • Knowledge of automated testing and scripting using Python or similar languages is a plus.
  • Knowledge of power management, signal integrity, and PCB design for high-speed systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities to effectively convey complex technical information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, with experience in cross-functional collaboration and understanding of product requirements.

Compensation: Up to $180k
