Drew University is seeking a Building Carpentry Engineer in the Facilities Department. This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position. Qualified applicants need to possess the skills that will allow them to maintain buildings and related structures by applying carpentry skills/techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install building components such as walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, patios, and fencing. Work includes performing inspections, new installations, repairs and routine maintenance of structural components of campus buildings and other campus structure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs all facets of the carpentry trade including rough, finish carpentry, framing, fiberglass reinforced plastic panel (FRP), concrete board, and sheetrock installation, and plaster/lathe repair.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and installs commercial and residential doors (glass, metal and wood) including mortising slabs, hanging doors, installing door hardware, as well as adjusting and replacing hinges, kick plates, wraps, closers, and crash bars.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and installs windows including replacing balances, locks, sashes, screens and glazing.
  • Installs and repairs flooring and wall base, including carpet, ceramic, porcelain, marble, stone, travertine and vinyl floors; and composite, pvc/ plastic rubber, vinyl and wood trim.
  • Installs, repairs and replaces ceilings, ceiling systems and its components including architectural and acoustic ceiling tiles, sheetrock, framing, grids, and tracks, cut, modify and trim ceiling tiles.
  • Installs and repairs vanities, cabinets, solid surface counters, plastic laminates and wood veneers, shower enclosures and pans, as needed.
  • Performs related work such as hanging items on walls, making window screens, drilling holes in signs, ordering materials and supplies, and cleaning, sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment.
  • Assists in job set-up, including delivering of materials and clean-up of completed projects.
  • Washes walls and woodwork, scrapes old and loose paint from varied types of surfaces, applies joint compound, masonry and silicone caulk, spackle and wood filler to holes and joints needed to be filled, patches and tapes drywall and plasters walls where needed; uses primers, sealers, latex and oil paints, paint removers, solvents and thinners, and drying agents.
  • Uses brushes, rollers, paint sprayers and other assigned methods of application and removal. Paints brick, composite, cement, metal, tile and wood walls, floors and ceilings; interiors and exteriors of buildings; pipes, equipment, fencing and fence materials, metal railings, roofs and other types of ironwork.
  • Installs pictures, murals, special fabric and vinyl wall coverings, and wall decorations.
  • Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes.
  • Manages material, parts and supply inventory levels, notifies leadership when inventory levels are low with the appropriate amount of lead time to ensure work is completed on time.
  • Responds to emergencies to mitigate and/or resolve immediate concerns or safety issues.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5 - 10 years’ experience in Carpentry
  • Able to communicate through computer email, telephone, two-way radio systems and cell phone.
  • Able to work on ladders, lifts and scaffolding frequently while adhering to all OSHA safety procedures. Able to work a rotating on-call schedule and after-hours emergency response.
  • Able to work some overtime, weekend and holiday coverage when scheduled
  • Able to move around campus and throughout the campus buildings
  • Able to bend, stoop, twist, climb up and down ladders.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
  • Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Job requires work outdoors exposed to different environmental conditions
  • Able to understand plans, design specifications, and equipment operating manual instructions
  • Competency using tools and operating equipment
  • US Driver’s License required, able to drive an automobile, van, light truck or utility vehicles.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures, such as Lock Out /Tag Out
  • Ability to understand and apply professional industry standards for installation, repairs and safety
  • Ability to operate power tools and equipment
  • Ability to operate computer-based equipment
  • Adaptability to work in a diverse environment, focusing on customer satisfaction under high-stress conditions, and organize an effective response to day-to-day requirements, and one-of-a-kind extreme situations
  • Administrative coordination, regarding job assignments, productivity, time management
  • Knowledge of the operating practices of preventive maintenance
