Drew University is seeking a Building Plumbing Engineer in the Facilities Department. This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position. This position provides the skilled work required to repair and maintain all University plumbing systems, including domestic water, storm system, sanitary sewer system, irrigation, and HVAC heating and cooling piping.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform general maintenance, repair, and inspection of campus plumbing equipment and plumbing systems. Identify issues and provide solutions. Respond to plumbing emergencies promptly and takes immediate steps to contain the problem, including water cleanup and other tasks to maintain the safety of an area.
- Assembles, installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, water filling stations, hot water tanks, and dishwashers.
- Assembles and installs pipefittings and pipes composed of materials such as iron, steel, copper and plastic. Insulates/cuts/threads/joins pipes by the use of screwed, bolted, soldered, caulked or plastic solvent joints.
- Replaces various types of valves and piping, and pack valves including but not limited to steam valves, domestic water valves, and pressure regulating valves.
- Performs basic rigging.
- Processes hot work permits and performs necessary fire watch procedures and inspections.
- Installs, repairs, modifies and maintains gas fired residential heating systems.
- Tests pressure piping systems to insure there are no leaks and that all system components are operating properly.
- Maintains and troubleshoots water filtration stations.
- Works with a rotating on call schedule and after hours recall.
- Completes and tracks preventative maintenance as scheduled.
- Researches, orders, and maintains inventory of parts needed to keep operations running; maintains and accounts for tools used.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Coordinates and inspects the work performed by outside contractors.
- Prepares estimates time and materials needed to complete repairs.
- Processes paperwork including but not limited to work orders, inventory, and preventative maintenance forms.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 5 – 10 years in commercial plumbing
- Backflow certification preferred
- Current knowledge of the National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC) and other applicable building codes.
- Able to communicate through computer email, telephone, two-way radio systems and cell phone.
- Able to work a rotating on call schedule and after-hours emergency response.
- Able to work some overtime weekend and holiday coverage when scheduled.
- Normal mobility to move around campus and campus buildings.
- Able to bend, stoop, twist, climb up and down ladders.
- Able to lift and carry 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
- Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions.
- Able to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturer’ instructions.
- Competency using tools and operating equipment.
- US Driver’s License required; able to drive an automobile, van, light truck or utility vehicle.
Skills:
- Knowledge of safe operating procedures, such as lock out/tag out.
- Familiarity with Pro Press tools and fittings.
- Ability to braze and solder.
- Ability to understand and apply industry standards for installation, repairs and safety.
- Ability to operate power tools and equipment
- Ability to operate computer-based equipment
- Familiarity with computerized CMMS work order process
- Adaptability to work in a diverse environment, focusing on customer satisfaction under high-stress conditions, and organize an effective response to day-to-day requirements, and one-of-a-kind extreme situations.
- Administrative coordination regarding job assignments, productivity, time management
- Knowledge of the operating practices of preventive maintenance.
