POSITION SUMMARY
The Behavioral Specialist creates and oversees behavioral plans and supports the Resident Life Coaches with behavioral situations. He or she will also assist Resident Life Coaches in implementation of classes and oversee growth of social development. This position works within the Resident Life Team and will also perform duties of the Resident Life Coach such as teaching classes to the residents on social emotional issues as well as appropriate boundaries in relationships. He or she will also work side by side in the residents’ cottages on tasks such as cleaning up and organizing as it relates to personal growth. The Behavioral Specialist will communicate with families concerning behaviors and behavioral plans and communicate with outside therapists on existing behavioral plans.ResponsibilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position.  This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Observing and assessing resident growth.
  • Supporting coaches in the classroom setting as well as social settings as it relates to behaviors and engagement.
  • Communicating with members of the Resident Life Team, caregivers, and families when necessary.
  • Monitoring, recording, and communicating progress for annual service plans with Director of Community Life.
  • Communication in Lifeloop regarding residents in both Teams and Lifeloop.
  • Provide training to coaches for classroom behavioral management when needed.
  • Exploring and collaborating with outside resources for enrichment of our programs.
  • Working with the Nursing Department to report mood changes and factors affecting behaviors.
  • Willingness to jump into situations when residents might be exhibiting negative behaviors.
  • Encourage and prompt all residents to classes to improve engagement.
 
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Behavioral Specialist will collaborate with coaches and model appropriate interactions in the learning and social environments.
This individual will be willing to work evenings and weekends.
 
 
 Required Skills

 

Educational Requirements and Experience:
  • Degree in education, mental health, psychology, or a related field required.
  • Experience and direct contact with adult individuals with special needs.
  • Strong working knowledge of behavioral theory and/or applied behavior analysis.
  • Understanding of the characteristics and behaviors associated with disorders.
  • Ability to handle intense emotional situations.
  • Ability to apply behavioral principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent stress management skills.
  • Comfort in making decisions regarding well-being of residents.
  • Ability to communicate with families of residents and have difficult conversations.
  • Professionalism.
  • Special education experience or behavioral experience required.

Background Checks:
  • Must at all times meet employability conditions of the Employee Misconduct Registry (EMR) and Nurse Aid Registry (NAR), as maintained by Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities (TDADS).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Ability:
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking the primary language of the residents.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Teaching others
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
Cognitive Demands:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to make quick decisions
Computer Skills:
Ability to use Microsoft Windows and Office.  Ability to use software to design calendars and signs. Ability to use the Internet and a Laminator.
