The Maintenance Technician [Non-Trade] will undertake a variety of daily tasks relating to general park maintenance. The employee provides the daily “hands-on” physical labor required to keep park areas and structures under Hudson River Park Trust’s jurisdiction in a safe, clean and operable condition. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Maintenance.

Specific Tasks & Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to, the following:

Supervision

  • Provide general supervision of park sanitation and custodial contracted staff.
  • Ensure Park facilities are cleaned, open and closed at appropriate times including but not limited to playgrounds, skateparks, dog runs and public bathrooms.

General Maintenance:

  • Cleaning as a result of daily park usage, special events or specific work.
  • Set-up and breakdown of equipment required for special events, including crowd control systems to protect park areas.
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of signage.
  • Manual and mechanical sweeping and washing of surfaces including graffiti and gum removal.
  • Custodial and janitorial activities within all facilities and public park buildings.
  • Inventory and replenishment of consumable supplies for public restrooms and maintenance needs.
  • Maintenance, inspection and repair of recreational facilities.
  • Painting and paint removal by hand or mechanical means.
  • Maintenance, inspection and repair of Trust offices and public spaces including but not limited to repair of doors, windows, locks and associated hardware.
  • Installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of site furnishings, such as railings, fountains, etc.
  • Inspection and maintenance of paved surfaces (all types).

Safety:

The Trust places the highest value on the safety of our staff, contractors, tenants, volunteers and the visiting public.

  • Perform and ensure tasks carried out safely and comply with requirements for use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must safely operate all tools, vehicles, and specialized equipment.
  • Perform inspections of facilities, assets, and systems and document issues observed that require resolution.

Other:

  • Perform snow and ice removal activities, including shoveling, operation of specialized equipment, and application of deicing products.
  • Must be willing and able to perform duties of other divisions/positions as directed or required commensurate with need and incumbent’s level of skill.
  • Complete work orders and daily tasks as assigned, track time, resources and materials used on a daily basis, complete reports and make notifications in line with policies and procedures. The position will require learning HRPT’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Specialized training in maintenance or other related field is preferred. The position requires a minimum of one to three years’ of maintenance experience.
  • Sufficiently skilled in written and verbal communication; ability to communicate with immediate supervisor, colleagues and the Trust’s Operations Desk effectively in line with policy and procedure concerning incidents or issues within the park which require attention

Special Requirements:

  • Act in a professional manner at all times with other staff, contractors, vendors and park patrons.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean history, with ability to operate a manual transmission is preferred.
  • Direct physical labor (lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, squatting, digging, etc.) is expected and seasonal gardeners must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Candidates should have an interest in learning and acquiring new skills.

Compensation, Benefits & Schedule:

  • Hourly salary range $23.32 to $24.04
  • Evening Hours 3pm -11:30pm Tue- Sat (with one half-hour unpaid lunch), holiday and weekend work required.
  • This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement between HRPT and Local 30 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.
