Zap Energy is looking for a Radiation Safety Specialist to support our team. We are seeking an individual experienced in establishing and maintaining radiation safety protocols and regulatory compliance; familiar with radiation physics for shielding design, radiation detection and measurement; and ideally some familiarity with fusion science and neutron radiation. This role will support Zap’s Radiation Safety Officer and the entire Zap team as we are building a commercially viable fusion platform. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • This position will support Zap Energy’s Radiation Safety Officer in protecting our people and environment and maintaining compliance with relevant licenses. 

  • Develop and maintain the recordkeeping program for license compliance.  

  • Perform radiation hazard evaluation, dose and risk assessment, radiation survey, dose monitoring, and leak tests. 

  • Maintain the functionality and up-to-date calibration status of the radiation detectors and dose monitoring instruments. Would involve improving the existing radiation measurement systems and developing more advanced systems when needed. 

  • Develop technical notes and documentation for license compliance.   

  • Contribute to the radiation shielding analysis and design. 

  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and test of radiation safety systems.  

  • Support continuous improvement and implementation of Zap Radiation Safety Programs: dosimetry, instrumentation, radiological protection for public and environment, fusion device operation, etc.. 

  • Support development and operation of advanced radiation detectors, such as organic or inorganic scintillators, neutron activation detectors, as well as the related front-end and data acquisition electronics 

Qualifications 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Master's degree in nuclear engineering, radiological engineering, health physics, radiation physics, medical physics or related field with a minimum 2 years of applicable experience performing duties similar to those listed above. 

  • Deep understanding of:  

  • Radiation physics and nuclear physics.  

  • Principles, practices, and methods of radiation protection in a mixed environment of neutrons and other types of radiation. 

  • Laws and regulations concerning control of ionizing radiation. 

  • Hands-on experience in handling radioactive materials, active and passive dose measurement instruments, and radiation detectors  

  • Demonstrated experience in Monte Carlo radiation simulation codes, e.g., MCNP or PHITS, for neutron transport modeling 

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in radiation protection programs. 

 Preferred: 

  • American Academy of Health Physics Certified Health Physicist.  

  • Experience working with WA state Dept of Health regulators and the relevant sections of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). 

  • Experience in shielding design or radiation detector development 

  • Experience working in pulsed radiation fields or particle accelerators.

The estimated annual salary range for this position is $100K-140K. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and the actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  The range is published in accordance with the Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.
