Often these facilities operate expensive equipment that must remain fully functional throughout the construction process. We provide a full-service construction offering for complex multi-phased projects, renovations, and expansions and new from the ground-up construction.

 

 Position Summary:

In conjunction with the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent helps to oversee the safe execution of daily construction activities at the jobsite.  Supervises and coordinates various subcontractors and individual trades to ensure contract compliance.  Works to ensure workmanship quality, schedule, and safety of the jobsite.  May be responsible for a specific area within the jobsite.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Fulfills primary leadership role and assumes responsibility for jobsite in absence of Superintendent
  • Maintains open and active communication with architects, engineers, subcontractors, owners, facility, field personnel and Batten & Shaw team
  • Conducts punch list inspections and ensures that any deficiencies are corrected
  • Oversees daily execution of performed work for compliance to contract specification and drawings
  • Reads and interprets submittals, contract documents, and shop drawings in order to gain understanding of and ensure compliance with construction requirements
  • Conducts jobsite safety meetings
  • Manages work activities within assigned budget
  • In conjunction with Superintendent, manages jobsite safety practices in adherence to OSHA guidelines
  • Schedules and oversees work activities for assigned areas of responsibility
  • Collaborates with architects, engineers, subcontractors, owners, and Batten & Shaw team
  • Ensures that all jobsite equipment and tools are in safe working order
  • Maintains a strong degree of professionalism in all aspects of oral and written communication
  • Directs Batten & Shaw field personnel as necessary to meet schedule requirement and fulfill project needs

 

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience in commercial construction, preferably in an Assistant Superintendent role
  • Active First Aid and CPR certification
  • Healthcare construction experience strongly preferred
  • OSHA training preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to travel extensively and be away from home for extended periods of time
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction and renovation of building structures
  • Ability to self-perform small maintenance work items required to meet the 2010 American Disaility Act Standards for Healthcare Construction:
    • Relocating grab bars and toilet accessories
    • Minor patching and painting of walls
    • Minor demolition
    • Minor casework modifications
    • Read building drawings
    • Willingness to learn ADA
    • Installation of Door Hardware
    • Patching VCT and ceramic floors
    • Minor plumbing modifications-
    • Quality workmanship
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principals involved in production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models
  • Understanding of ICRA requirements
  • Functional understanding of scheduling software and practices
  • Specific understanding of working electrical and mechanical systems
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with all levels of individuals including subcontractors, laborers, owner, peers, and supervisors
  • Detail-oriented with the capacity to learn quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans and drawings
  • Ability to oversee safe work practices to ensure adherence to OSHA guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project activities within time constraints of detailed schedule
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable quality work and unsafe work practices
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely project reporting as a fundamental requirement of position
  • Ability to work autonomously with limited direct supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others
  • Ability to follow details through to completion
