Emergency Department Technician

The Emergency Department Technician is responsible for working closely with the nurse to provide excellent direct patient care supporting activities of assessment, testing, and diagnosis of patient presenting to the emergency department, and helps prevent complications


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients and teammates, providing the highest level of customer service and acting as a resource for the interdisciplinary team.
  • Report abnormal findings or changes in patients' conditions, including vital signs, ADLs, ambulation, transfers, and daily weights, to the RN promptly.
  • Obtain and report vital signs as scheduled and as needed in a timely manner, and assist patients with all aspects of personal care, including bowel and bladder care, ambulating, and repositioning.
  • Support safe patient ambulation and fall prevention, maintain a clean and organized bedside area, and remain flexible in assisting patients and teammates as needed.
  • Perform intentional hourly rounding to ensure patients' needs are met, conduct 12-lead EKGs, and perform proper venipuncture with accurate specimen labeling.
  • Safely retrieve, process, and transport instruments to sterile processing, and transport patients by stretcher or wheelchair for testing or admission.
  • Perform direct observation and safety monitoring for at-risk patients, conduct ordered POC testing, and stock patient rooms and medical equipment carts with necessary supplies.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • HS diploma or equivalent experience
  • Will obtain BLS during introductory period

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Prior patient assessment and care experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, and IV solutions.
  • Stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers).
  • Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able to physically operate the equipment used for the job.
