Job Summary

As Assistant Director of Engineering you will help maintain the highest standards of engineering and maintenance. Responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the engineering department, ensuring the safety, efficiency, and overall quality of the hotel’s facilities, and supporting the Director of Engineering in planning and project management.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Oversee the daily operations of the engineering department, ensuring systems are operating efficiently and in compliance with hotel standards.
  • Supervise and lead the engineering team, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  • Manage maintenance and repair activities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance programs are in place and executed regularly to avoid equipment breakdowns and service interruptions.
  • Ensure all guest areas, including rooms, public spaces, and back-of-house facilities, are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and functionality.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promptly address and resolve any maintenance-related guest concerns or complaints.
  • Ensure all hotel operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including health and safety codes.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify and address potential safety hazards.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, safety inspections, and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor energy usage and recommend improvements for more efficient operations.
  • Ensuring all maintenance and repair work is completed within budget.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising service quality or safety.
  • Assist the Director of Engineering in planning and executing improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of projects.
  • Oversee major repairs, renovations, and installations to ensure they meet hotel standards.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to ensure team members are knowledgeable about best practices.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering or maintenance, preferably in a luxury hotel or resort setting.
  • Proven track record of leadership and team management.
  • Experience with budget management and project management in a hospitality environment.
  • Uses basic computer hardware and software.
  • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period or for an entire work shift.
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Legally allowed to work in the United States

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on guest satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with other departments and external vendors.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and wet environments.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously throughout the workday.
